Staunch Defense

Yolanda knows I like strategy games. She also knows I enjoy a tower defense game here and there. She asked me about Staunch Defense when it went on sale for ninety-nine cents. I took one look at this iPhone/iPod Touch app and said no way. It looked horrible. I was judging a book by its cover. You know where this is going to end up right? She bought it and nicely asked me to try and work it in. So I did - hence this review. I was shocked at how deep and strategic Staunch Defense actually is.

I have to get the graphics out of the way. Staunch Defense does not look great. The creatures, the defenses, and the game play fields look bad. I am really sorry, but it is true. There is violence in Staunch Defense as the players defenses shoot down the creatures trying to walk along that path. And really what right do we have to murder them as they are on a stroll?

The audio department of Staunch Defense is adequate. I enjoyed the sound effects. At times it can get overwhelming when tons of towers are going off at the same time. Staunch Defense gives the players hints on things to do to improve their strategy. I liked that because it reminded me of aspects of this game I had forgotten.

Currently Staunch Defense is selling for three dollars (one penny shy). There are only twenty-four game play boards. The price is a little steep in my opinion. There are a lot of different defenses that can be used. Gold is earned, and that is used to upgrade defenses, research improvements, and purchase the defenses. Resources must be mined by certain buildings. This is important because you can run out of something in a level. This will hamper your strategy.

Strategy is what Staunch Defense is all about. There are buildings that do all kinds of different things. Some even let you go back a level and try things a different way. The levels can have a few waves, up to many waves. Land must be purchased, and houses have to be built to generate more gold. The depth of the strategy in Staunch Defense is astounding. Mix any real time strategy resource acquisition with a tower defense game and you get the general idea. I had fun playing Staunch Defense.

I found Staunch Defense to be very addicting. I wanted to beat the map, and move on to the next one. I kept thinking about the best way of defending the villages from these creatures walking through. Staunch Defense taught me a balanced defense is best. Get some plants, fire, lightning and stone buildings out there. Investing in what is out there is cheaper than building new. I also found out that repairing existing buildings is also cheaper.
