 SolaRola

When major players from the home console market create games for the iOS platform, Family Friendly Gaming takes notice. There are so many questions concerning transitions like this one. But it seems to be more of an expansion than a transition. Square Enix is still making their main stable games. They are expanding with some interesting casual games that families can get behind.

SolaRola involves a few round blob characters. They crash into a planet and must acquire resources to progress. Okay so the storyline has been used before in the video game industry. It is just an excuse to play some fun little levels. In some ways SolaRola brings that console experience with it. I played quite a few levels that reminded me of things I have done in console games.

SolaRola looks great. The bright colors, and attention to detail produced a vibrant world that anyone can enjoy. There are obstacles in our way. Bumping into them separates our blob into multiple smaller balls. Then we have to do the level over again. Bright golden stars are hidden in levels as one of the major hidden items.

The music in SolaRola is fresh, fun, and fantastic. This is Square Enix we are talking about here, so that is to be expected. I am pleased to see they put enough resources into creating a high quality product. The levels in SolaRola exhibit an intelligent design. They are also generally pretty short and quick, which goes great with a hand held.

SolaRola provides families with two ways of playing it. There are on screen controls or tilting the device around. Long time readers know how I feel about on screen buttons on this platform. The tilting method works much better. There is one on screen button still though - jumping. So we tilt around and press on the bottom right hand corner to jump. This work okay most of the time. I had a few issues in certain levels that led to some frustration.

Family Friendly Gaming was provided a code to review SolaRola. We are very thankful for the opportunity to play and review this iPhone/iPod Touch app. SolaRola has enough content to warrant the fair price. It is wonderful that Square Enix picked up SolaRola, and ran with it on this hand held. The game is a lot of fun - even if it is challenging at times.
