Retro Racing

The iPhone/iPod Touch platform is not really known for its good racing games. Retro Racing from Qwakers is setting out to change all that. Retro Racing is a throw back to some of the racing games from the past. It does so with class, and style. Players have three buttons to use while racing in Retro Racing. There is the gas (also known as going forward), turning left and turning right.

Players pick vehicles based on attributes. There are on track items that will increase attributes so not much strategy is needed. Place in third place or higher and you can progress to the next track. There are twelve tracks in all in Retro Racing at the time of writing this review. Which is light, but do not expect to beat any of them the first time you try them.

Retro Racing has a sharp, crisp, clean, and clear look to it. There are some neat visual effects like tire tracks when rubber is being burned. The tracks look good, and so do the little cars. Cars can bump into one another but there is no damage. I bounced up against a few buildings in Retro Racing before the concept of avoiding them entered my brain.

The car revving noises, and the track sounds fit Retro Racing marvelously. I enjoy listening to this app while on the menu screens. Which are efficient, but that is about it. The replay value of Retro Racing is diminished due to how little there is to unlock. I would love to see more tracks, because Qwakers is on the right road with Retro Racing.

The game play in Retro Racing irritated me at first. I was very unhappy with how this game played. I was all ready to thrash this game based on the on screen controls. I would turn the wrong direction and then the race was over. I could not figure out how to quickly restart a race either. Then something magical happened. I beat the first race. I learned how to play Retro Racing, and started to have success. I found shortcuts, and tried different vehicles.

I found Retro Racing to be a fun little game. It does not have all the bells and whistles a F1 game has, but it has charm. It also is one of those games that will challenge you. I learned to pay attention to the race track and the other drivers thanks to Retro Racing. I could run into the other racers, but it provided me no advantage and actually slowed me down. So Retro Racing is teaching me to race clean.
