Polara

Polara is a runner app. It is done in a 2D side scrolling kind of presentation. It adds an interesting concept to the running from the beginning to the end. There are red and blue colors the player can be. This coincides with the red and blue lasers that appear in the levels. Players must match colors or they explode in painful misery.

As I played Polara I thought of Metroid. Why would I have that kind of a thought? Polara has a female agent as the main character. She is how shall I say this - well formed. And she likes to show off her lustful features. This is done in cut scenes between the levels. She wears a suit of armor and a helmet while running in the levels.

Polara has neat little music to enhance the presentation. There is also some humor that could be offensive, and some language that was really not needed. I think Polara was going for a gritty Tomb Raider kind of an atmosphere. Or maybe they wanted to enter the macabre world of Halo. Whatever it was, it is definitely more adult only.

The controls in Polara are easy to learn. We tap to jump, and we tap to change colors. Are you wondering if that can lead to any problems? If you did you are completely right. I would want to jump at times and my character changed color. She then fell to her untimely demise. And sometimes the opposite happened. This led to frustration.

Polara costs $2.99, which is a little high for an app like this in my opinion. There are fifty levels, four boss stages, and six unlockable modes. The control issues crank up the difficulty on an already tough game. Expect to die early, and often in Polara. There are things that could have been done to make it more family friendly.
