Nostalgia

The role playing game genre has been stagnant for many years now. There are not many new ideas coming to the genre. Too many of the games are sequels or becoming anti-family. In fact the disturbing rise of the adult only games has billions of families shunning the role playing game genre altogether. Nostalgia tries some different things, and it comes across as a completely new experience. Players walk around town, but fly in an airship around the world. The airship has to be upgraded to be able to defeat the monsters as new areas are reached. The team of characters fight in dungeons in the standard turn based role playing battles. Players start out Nostalgia trying to find their father. He is an adventurer who went missing. So you set off to find him. Eventually the story develops to show an evil Cabal that must be stopped.

Nostalgia tries a lot of things with the graphics that the Nintendo DS just can’t completely handle. There are animations that are off, a female pirate who could use more clothes, and role playing turn based violence. The movies in Nostalgia look good. Some of the other things are not so great looking in terms of details.

There are aspects of Nostalgia that remind this reviewer of the Wild Arms franchise. One of the characters wields a gun. The music is good, and fits the theme of this game masterfully. The special effect sounds are diverse, although some sound like clocks. The dialogue is genuine as certain characters conflict on a routine basis. The attitudes is what helps earn the rating in this reviewer’s mind.

Nostalgia attachment to the real world - albeit drastically different is fascinating. Going to New York, London, and more gives it a familiarity. There is a ton to do in Nostalgia. This ranges from the main game to side quests, and extra areas to unearth. Nostalgia includes various armors and upgrades that players will want to utilize.

One of the cool things about Nostalgia is there is little need to grind. Certain areas increase the difficulty dramatically, so some grinding is needed. Since players get their stats restored when they level up, players can get themselves up to speed quickly when they are over their head in a dungeon. Like most role playing games leveling up, earning gold, and buying better equipment is what is needed to get past a tough are. Nostalgia includes enough clues to find your way to the next destination.

Nostalgia includes things like Noah’s Ark, and temples for various religions. One of the characters on the team is a witch. There is a spiritual aspect to Nostalgia. Christians will be uncomfortable with certain aspects, and happy to see others. The well known concept of saving the world from evil characters is rooted deeply in Nostalgia. Sequels would be welcome.
