NCAA Football 13 NCAA Football 13

Mid July means you can almost hear the sounds of the college marching bands in the distances. Living in a college town, I love listening to the marching band practice in evenings as it gets me excited for Saturday afternoon College Football. Having been to my share of college games, it is almost too difficult to describe the level of enthusiasm and emotion fans bring consistently every Saturday to support their favorite collegiate football teams. But what I can not sum up in words, EA has mastered in NCAA Football 13.

From the moment the EA logo comes on the screen, NCAA Football 13 provides an authentic college football experience that is deeper than any previous entry in the series. All the tried and true modes are still around, but an improved Dynasty mode and a new Heisman mode add new depth that take the replay value to an entirely new level. Have a favorite Heisman winner? Maybe he wasn’t on your favorite team, but now he can be. Imagine all of those SEC fans who despised Tim Tebow because he was not on their team, well now they can place him on their team and run through the SEC to win the title and the Heisman. It is a fun mode and will keep those die hards busy until next season. Keep in mind that 10 come with purchase of game and others are available as DLC and preorder bonus.

EA also brought to the table some additional ESPN integration with game updates (from other games within your ongoing season) with ESPN host Reese Davis. These could have been presented a little livelier, but this gives EA something to look at for next season. Regarding presentation, everything still feels like a Saturday afternoon on ESPN. A few more updated graphics or pre-game cutscenes would have been nice, but again I am really grasping at straws here.

Brad Nessler and Kirk Herbstreit are back for another season and do an adequate job calling the game. There are still some calls where they are behind and a few that do not make perfect sense to the play, but overall this is the best commentary team in the video game football industry.

The biggest improvement in NCAA Football 13, which may be overlooked by the casual gamer, is the attention to detail EA placed on improving the gameplay and on-field presentation. With tons of new catch animations and improve passing controls, gameplay in a football game has never been more authentic - including big brother Madden. In previous installments of NCAA gamers would simply run back 10 to 15 yards and throw the ball downfield off their back foot and the game would allow it. With the new improvements, running around in the pocket like that is a thing of the past. New animations and throwing controls make the game more realistic and challenging.

On the surface, NCAA Football 13 may not appear to be a huge leap forward from the amazingly successful season of NCAA Football 12. However, the gameplay improvement alone are reason enough for NCAA Football 13 to find its way onto your gaming shelf. I appreciate EA Sports’ continuing effort to push the envelope on gameplay and presentation, as that is where a great game is defined. And NCAA Football 13 is just that, a great game!
