MLB09 The Show

When I heard we missed MLB 09 The Show on the Playstation Portable I decided to purchase it. I had heard it had been a little bit of an off year so I wanted to verify that. In some ways MLB 09 The Show is a little bit below the year before and year after. MLB 09 The Show is another year of baseball on the portable system. Sony attempted to include many features. The problem is certain aspects of this baseball game are lacking. The biggest thing lacking is the graphics. I will get to that in just a few words.

Were those fewer words than you were expecting? The stadiums look okay, and the fields look really nice. The players look okay. I noticed lots of pixilation, and the fans are horrible looking. They look one dimensional, and having few details. I did not find offensive graphics in MLB 09 The Show. I could tell which team was which, but the Mariners playing the Padres did get confusing in pre-season.

One of the best aspects of MLB 09 The Show is the announcers. They generally do a wonderful job calling the game. At times they offer interesting advice. Other times I marveled at how accurate they were. Like letting me know I swung at the first pitch. There is not one song in MLB 09 The Show that I like. In fact I went into the Jukebox and turned all of them off. I appreciate that option, I just wish there were some good family friendly songs in this Playstation Portable game.

Sony packed MLB 09 The Show with numerous modes. I enjoyed hitting home runs, and playing seasons. One of the cool features of MLB 09 The Show is you can have it simulate a game at any point. So lets say you play three innings and want the game to finish it off for you. Go ahead and select that. This means we can play this hand held game as much or as little as we want. I would advise baseball fans to pass on MLB 09 The Show. Go with the year after for a better game.

Batting in MLB 09 The Show is pretty easy. Hit a button at the right time to swing. You can also try and guess the pitch if you want to. Pitching gets a little more difficult. The game suggests where to throw the pitch, and which one to use. This is easier said than done with the control scheme. You also need to be paying attention. Take your eyes off the game and you will miss placement. Still all in all MLB 09 The Show is some good baseball action.

I am happy to see this franchise coming back year after year on the Playstation Portable. It is nice to have a baseball simulation game on the hand held systems. Too often companies ignore the handhelds for the major home console systems. I look forward to future years of this franchise.
