Kinect Joyride

Want to know something funny? Microsoft finally takes the family friendly market seriously, and they have all kinds of success. We have been preaching that here at Family Friendly Gaming for years, and it is nice to hear Microsoft give us an: “Amen” in response. Kinect Joy Ride is another Kinect title that I purchased for the magazine. I had a feeling this game would be good. I played it at E3 in the year of our Lord 2010, and was impressed. Players stand up put their hands out like they are holding a steering well, and race. There are various modes in Kinect Joy Ride. You can straight race, or race with weapons (ala Mario Kart). There are also stunt, and smash levels. Tricks have their own area and can be used in regular races.

The visuals in Kinect Joy Ride have a nice soft look and feel to them. Avatars are used in the game as the race car drivers. The cars look amazing, and the tracks are very diverse. If you are paying attention you should have no problem finding the short cuts. I saw them almost immediately on every track. Since there are weapons and smash it up levels there is some violence in Kinect Joy Ride. I like how those can be avoided if you choose to play clean.

If you put joy in the title of your game, then you better bring it when it comes to the music. Thankfully Kinect Joy Ride includes fun and happy songs. I had a blast listening to the sounds in this Xbox 360. The special effect sounds amplify this Kinect title. The best example is when your vehicle is boosting. I like the concept of earning fans while I play levels.

There are enough levels in Kinect Joy Ride to keep families busy for a few weeks at a minimum. Four players can enjoy this game locally, and up to eight can enjoy it in the online mode. I used my own money to purchase Kinect Joy Ride, and feel I got my money’s worth.

I was concerned about the controls in Kinect Joy Ride. I had heard some people complain about them in various Kinect titles. I wondered if they were warranted or not. Thankfully I had no issues with the controls in this Xbox 360 game. I was able to easily steer, boost, and perform tricks. I believe Kinect Joy Ride is the kind of a game that should show up in the dictionary under the definition of fun.

Families can learn how to win and how to lose thanks to Kinect Joy Ride. There are also lessons in steering, finding a better path, and spending time together. I am so glad that Microsoft published Kinect Joy Ride. It was a real pleasure for me to play and review this title. I hope and pray they will continue this franchise in the future.
