Jak and Daxter Collection
SCORE: 74
The Playstation 2 (PS2) was one of the
most successful video game machines of all time. There were plenty of
great games on that system. Games like The Bible Game, and Larry Boy and
the Bad Apple stay memorable to this day. Sony had quite a few different
characters and franchises they brought to gamers on the PS2. They have
been on a campaign to remind gamers of many of those franchises in the
form of collections.
I will come completely clean on something. I love video game
collections. I enjoy getting a game that contains more than one game in
it. This time it is the Jak and Daxter Collection. This Playstation 3
(PS3) disc contains Jak and Daxter, Jak II, and Jak 3. All three of
these games have been remastered in HD. You know what that means right?
They look better than ever before.
The three games in Jak and Daxter Collection range in their ESRB
ratings. The first game Jak and Daxter received an 'E' for Everyone
rating. The other two earned 'T' for Teen ratings. The content does take
a darker turn in the second two, and they are definitely more adult only
than the first game. Please keep that in mind when you decide if you
want your child to play Jak and Daxter Collection.
Graphically the worlds in Jak and Daxter Collection are alive with
color. Some of the games are brighter than others. Players will hit,
spin, and ground pound the enemies. Violence must be used on the bosses,
whereas there are enemies in levels that can be left alone. Certain
female characters are drawn to accentuate their sexuality.
The language in Jak and Daxter Collection surprised me. Most of it was
at the level of a PG-13 movie. The frequency was a little more often
than I was expecting. The Jak and Daxter franchise pokes fun at, and
mocks the entire genre. This does not stop players from going through
the motions of collecting items, and being the hero. The music in Jak
and Daxter Collection contains all kinds of subtle tones that add to the
production value.
We are getting three complete PS2 games in Jak and Daxter Collection.
This is not something that will be completely beaten in a few hours. So
I feel that Jak and Daxter Collection is worth the price of admission.
Especially if you comprehend the content in these three games. Sony
included a ton of various trophies in Jak and Daxter Collection. Finding
them all will also take some time.
I found some mild irritation with the camera in the first game. I would
want to turn it around to see something, and it hit an object. Thus it
would not rotate until I moved farther away. This got better in the
later games. There are enough items to collect in Jak and Daxter
Collection to keep most gamers engaged for weeks. Hidden content will
also spur hardcore games into playing Jak and Daxter Collection.
The characters in Jak and Daxter Collection go on quests as heroes.
Their motivations are not always noble though. This matches the cynical
outlook of many Gen X, and Gen Y'ers out there. They are trying to save
the day, and stop the bad guys. Elders are not respected generally in
Jak and Daxter Collection which is a shame since they have important
information to impart.
I like the fact that Sony has created these collections. I wish some
other companies would follow their lead on this. There are so many
franchises in the history of the industry that could make a come back in
this fashion. Maybe some day we will see things like a Wisdom Tree
collection, or a Shining Force collection. Hey a reviewer can dream
can't they?
