I am the artist of the family here at
Family Friendly Gaming. Paul told me about Flipbook HD on the iPad. This
is an art program where we can turn our creations into movies. Are you
familiar with the concept of flipping pages in a book quickly to see the
animation? Flipbook HD does this on the iPad. I started using Flipbook
HD with extremely high hopes. I thought it might be a way children could
learn the basics of animation.
I started up Flipbook HD, and went through the slide show that taught me
how to use it. Well it taught most things. I could not figure out how to
get rid of that slide show. It stayed there. So I tried to find a way to
create my own project. In the process of my trying different buttons
Flipbook HD crashed. And not just once or twice. It kept crashing. I
kept completely turning off my iPad, and coming back into the app.
Flipbook HD has a clean look to it. There are a few colors that we can
use to create our masterpieces, as well as different tools to do a few
things. I appreciate the animation in Flipbook HD. I love how we can
adjust how quickly or how slowly each slide will load. There are no
sounds in Flipbook HD so it is a quiet experience. Expect maybe your own
fussing trying to figure out how to do certain things.
I tried over and over again to find a way to duplicate one slide to the
next. I wanted to do that to make slight modifications to it. Having to
draw each page from scratch was a pain. Trying to figure out how to make
tracks invisible (tapping the eyeball to the left of it on the bottom
panel) was also a pain. Be careful what buttons you touch because you
can go into full screen mode and then have fun finding your way back.
The crashes are the biggest problem with Flipbook HD though. I hope an
upgrade fixes it. I sent them multiple reports until the app stopped
asking me to do it.
I see a lot of potential in Flipbook HD. This can be a great learning
tool for those interested in art and in animation. Flipbook HD is not
quite there yet, but I hope to see easier ways to copy and paste things,
as well as starting new projects. Keep an eye out for improvements in
Flipbook HD in the future, I certainly will be.
