Asteroids Gunner plus

Family Friendly Gaming has been noticing a trend from Atari. They are redesigning their older franchises, and putting them on the iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad platforms. You probably read our Breakout Boost review recently. Now it is time for Asteroid to get a complete make over. Technically it is not a complete make over since the main game concept is kept the same. It is developed, and enhanced the way retro gamers have dreamed about for years.

I remember playing Asteroid on the Atari 2600 for hours as a child. Now as an adult I am reviewing Asteroids Gunner+. Neighbors told me that I was wasting my time on that thing. They told me I would never use that later in life. I think we learned a little lesson there. They were wrong, and it was something I am using.

The graphics in Asteroids Gunner+ look wonderful. I noticed little details in the asteroids, and background that are above and beyond what I was expecting. Asteroids Gunner+ is very generous with the power ups, and they are easily identifiable. The violent factor the rating references is what we are doing to the asteroids, and of course aliens. We are blowing them into smaller pieces with our laser cannon. Eventually we disintegrate them.

The music in Asteroids Gunner+ is very mellow and relaxing. The shooting sounds will occupy most of the audio, and they are okay. The game will give an audio alarm when you have taken damage. Take too much damage and your space ship will explode. There are health items can be found by blowing up asteroids so keep that in mind.

Coins are collected in the levels of Asteroids Gunner+. There are also crystals that can be earned. Like most games you can purchase these crystals for a price. There is a free version of Asteroids Gunner+. The full game is currently costing $4.99. In-app purchases after paying five dollars seems a bit excessive to me. The positive side of Asteroids Gunner+ is there are one hundred and fifty levels in three galaxies.

The controls in Asteroids Gunner+ are exceptional. There is a control on the right bottom, and left bottom. The right control is where the cannon will fire, and the left control is where the space ship will fly. I instantly took to these controls like a fish to water. I could sit somewhere and fire as they went around me. Or I could fly to them if I needed to.

I am very thankful that Atari is publishing products like Asteroids Gunner+. It was a fun trip down memory lane for me. Plus this app is so much better than the original game. Parents should comprehend that there is violence in the shooting in Asteroids Gunner+. Most of the time we are busting apart rocks. So there is some consolation in that.
