Walkabout

Walkabout is a puzzle game where you walk a princess around the level collecting stars. That can't be hard can it? Well actually it is. The ground tile disappears when you walk off of it. That means your moves have to be planned or you will find yourself stuff with nowhere to go. Walkabout is nice to players and resets them pretty quickly. This little game will got stuck in my head. I was thinking about how to solve levels I found myself stuck in.

The graphics are colorful and cute in Walkabout. There is some diversity in the tiles. Some of them are water, grass, concrete, dirt, etc. I found no violence in Walkabout at all. Getting stuck meant my princess had to start the level over again. Walkabout is an iPhone/iPod Touch game that is visually safe for the entire family. The artwork is okay in this game. There are apps that have more polish, however I did not find any graphical issues with this app.

The music is cheerful in Walkabout. Certain special effect sounds like picking a level from the menu screen are familiar. So I brought in the video game encyclopedia - my husband, and he immediately told me where that sound came from. Mario fans will recognize that sound byte. I found no offensive sounds in Walkabout. Making a mistake and having to start over is not a big deal, and this game is encouraging about it.

Walkabout includes sixty-four main levels, and eight bonus levels. Keys are hidden in main levels to open up the bonus levels. Some of them ingeniously hidden. Walkabout sells for ninety-nine cents, so families get a lot of game for their money. I feel that Walkabout is worth the money. And yes Family Friendly Gaming was provided a download code for Walkabout.

The controls are so easy in Walkabout that children can play it. Swipe to the right on the screen to go right. Swipe left to go left. Swipe up to go up, and swipe down to go down. I had no problems with the controls. The puzzles are a completely different story. Certain puzzles in Walkabout were about ready to drive me mad. What made me even unhappier is when I had to ask someone for help, and they breezed right through the level.

The best thing about Walkabout is how it makes you plan for your upcoming actions. Just winging it only works for the first few levels. Then actually thought is required. This game is a great way to learn how to look at problems, and find solutions. I would like to see sequels to Walkabout in the future. This is the kind of a game that would fit great on the Nintendo DSi, and possibly the Nintendo 3DS. I am glad the publisher contacted us about Walkabout.
