The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky
SCORE: 68
It is rare to see a lot of new things in a
role playing game these days. Most are following the same tried and true
themes that have been established for years. The Legend of Heroes Trails
in the Sky shakes things up in a variety of ways. The system is
interesting, and hard to describe. The orbments contain quartz which are
what gives the player elemental magical skills. You also need energy
points to cast but that comes up later. Sepith is collected and that is
used to open orbment slots, and to create quartz. Monsters generally
drop sepith. Gold is gotten by completing missions/quests. Players work
for the Bracer's Guild so getting missions/quests is not that difficult.
XSeed Games and Falcom is a fantastic partnership. They have been
releasing role playing games that Americans would generally not get to
play. They are solid in the game play, and have interesting stories. The
Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky is a very slow game. Expect a lot of
grinding, and for the story to unravel at its own leisurely pace.
Players are from the Liberl Kingdom, and get to read the Liberl News.
Probably a little poke at the media in America.
The level of detail in The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky is
amazing. There are two main characters, a male and female. Guess what?
The female actually dresses appropriately. She is a bit of a tomboy, but
there are a few of those in the real world. There is a female character
who does expose herself. Someday there will be a modern role playing
game that will shun that practice. Players send their team members to
attack and use magic on the various enemies they fight. Expect this to
happen thousands of times during the fifty hours it will take to beat
The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky.
The music in The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky is amazing. This
reviewer enjoys listening to this game more than actually playing it.
There is a mountain of dialogue in this Playstation Portable (PSP) game.
Expect lengthy sequences where characters talk about a variety of
things. The characters have been fleshed out amazingly well. Which is
not always a good thing. Certain characters are not capable of
controlling their tongues, and others are very sexual. As an adult this
reviewer is not interesting in that kind of content, and wish it had
been edited out.
Family Friendly Gaming was provided a reviewable copy of The Legend of
Heroes Trails in the Sky for this review. There are three ways to
purchase The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky. The first is the normal
retail, the second is a download code, and the final is a limited
edition. The last one includes a CD soundtrack, poster, and Bracer Guild
replica badge. The price is decent for the length of the game, and
numerous side quests. The content issues, and speed of the story is
where most complaints will come from.
The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky reminds this reviewer of old
Lunar games. The players and enemies are on a field. They can each only
move to far in a turn. So you may want to attack an enemy but it will
take two turns to get to them. Magic spells rarely work in the same
turn, so those have to be planned accordingly. Special super powered
attacks are available when the bar is built up. Grinding is important to
be strong enough to complete quests, however that does not earn the
player gold (unless sepith is sold). So players need to balance out how
they play this hand held title. The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky
is one of those games that will make you think.
It was so exciting to hear characters talk about Sunday School in The
Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky. Then it was discovered that this
game has goddess worship in it. It would not be that hard to regionalize
this for Americans (when 80% self identify as Christians, and over 90%
believe in God). The characters in The Legend of Heroes Trails in the
Sky feel real because of the lengthy conversations. We are not playing
with saints here even though they are helping others most of the game.
One of them even uses tarot cards.
