The King of the Fighters 96
SCORE: 63
What most modern day gamers may not
understand is the The King of Fighters franchise was like a sports
title. It came out with a new game every single year. SNK improved upon
the previous versions in various ways. While The King of Fighters '96
may still have been off from Street Fighter titles it was getting a lot
closer. At the same time families care more about the content issues in
a game than how close it was to another franchise.
Unfortunately the bounce is back in The King of Fighters '96. There is
one female character in particular who is exposing a fair portion of her
upper body. This is bouncing all around as she stands, moves, etc. This
goes hand in hand with the violent part of The King of Fighters '96.
Players bash each other in until the health bar is gone. The violence
against women is also a part of The King of Fighters '96. There is also
violence against men for those concerned with that issue.
The voice at the start of The King of Fighters '96 is horrible. It is
sad that he is like that. He talks about this violent game returning for
another year. The sound bytes given to the characters are okay. They
would have been state of the art when The King of Fighters '96 was
originally released. Now they are very retro. The King of Fighters '96
includes many punching and kicking sounds. There are some slowdown and
special effects when the knock out blow is given.
The King of Fighters '96 contains twenty-seven fighters. We can go one
one one with the great ones. Or we could build a team of three fighters.
This leaves all kinds of options open to the player. In some ways The
King of Fighters '96 is like a fighting version of Pokemon with just
half as many allowed. The price of The King of Fighters '96 is fair,
especially those that like to play online.
The controls have improved in The King of Fighters '96. Previous years
were stiff, but this iteration started to flow much better. Sure some of
the characters in The King of Fighters '96 have Street Fighter like
moves. But ultimately there is enough different in The King of Fighters
'96 to sedate the most hardcore Street Fighter fanboy. Beating people up
over and over again can get old though. The best strategy is slow and
steady - like the Tortoise.
The lessons in The King of Fighters '96 should be pretty apparent.
Women's bodies are there for men to ogle. Get them before they get you.
Keep getting them until something stops you. It has been fun for the WMG
to see how this franchise has grown over the years. Hopefully SNK
Playmore will continue to release these titles. Gamers are getting a
trip down memory lane.
