Super Sidekicks

Super Sidekicks

Super Sidekicks is an old NEO GEO video game that has made it onto the Playstation 3 thanks to the NEOGEO STATION. Many of us missed these games the first time around, so it is very nice of SNK PLAYMORE USA CORP to provide us the opportunity. Family Friendly Gaming was provided a download code for Super Sidekicks. As the game implies this is a soccer game, that has an arcade feel. We are talking old style arcade not the Mario Strikers arcade style.

Even though Super Sidekicks is a really old game, the graphics impressed me. There are some nice details, and diversity among the members of the crowd. The font used for GOAL is awesome. The intensity of the characters reminded me of Super Street Fighter for some reason. The sound effects are okay in Super Sidekicks. Nothing that really stuck out, and nothing that offended me. The whole GOAL shout is impressive though.

Super Sidekicks includes numerous teams, and there are options for more than one player to enjoy this downloadable game. The price is a little high in my opinion for the trip down memory lane. A soccer game from a year ago can be found for the same price or lower and has a lot more to offer. I found myself having a lot of fun playing Super Sidekicks. I did notice a few glitches though. I would try to score, the goalie would knock the ball away, and I had another player where he knocked it to. I would come up trying to score with that player, and he would slide. A slide is done when you are on defense. No one was in possession of the ball so a slide does not make much sense. This quirk cost me numerous goals.

It is so awesome to see the player run around after scoring a goal. It is also nice to see the team after winning a game. Super Sidekicks makes me yearn for the days when arcade soccer games were similar to the real game without going simulation. No need for super powered kicks, power-ups, or special weapons. Just work on getting the ball down into the opponents goal. I would love to see this franchise return with a sequel.
