Squids

Squids is a cute little turn based action adventure role playing game. Yeah I know those genres do not always go together well. Squids pulls it off. The concept is pretty simple, but strategy gets complex. You pull your squid and launch them towards an enemy. If your squid reached them then expect some curling kind of action. The enemy will get knocked around and lose some health.

The player gets their turn and then the enemies get their turn. Pearls are collected and can be used to level up the squids. This is where the role playing element comes into play. There is also a storyline to Squids which enhances the role playing element. One level has to be beaten to move on to the next. There are various goals in the different levels to achieve.

Squids looks wonderful graphically. There is some cartoon violence as the squids ram the enemy sea life. There are also special attacks that contain varying degrees of violence as well. The colors in Squids are loud and proud. This is my kind of an app. Squids says it will work on an iPod Touch 3g, but we could not get it working on that one. It did work on an iPad, and iPod Touch 4G.

The creatures in Squids have an enormous amount of character. I really enjoyed seeing them. The music in Squids is fantastic. This game has near orchestra level quality in terms of music. The Game Bakers know what they are doing in this department for sure. The world that was created for Squids is amazing. I loved exploring. Maybe the world will grow in a sequel.

Flinging your squid towards the enemies to knock away their hit points sound simple. But there are four different classes in Squids: shooter, scouts, troopers, and healers. The special attacks, and bonus helmets add some strategy to Squids. Many of us at Family Friendly Gaming have been enjoying Squids on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

We have been covering Squids for months now. You probably saw screenshots in past issues of the magazine. I could tell back then that Squids was going to be something special. I am extremely thankful that I was able to play and review this app. I would love to be able to move around an entire world devoted to this game - not just in the combat levels.

I learned some fun things in Squids. I learned to aim before launching them. I learned to collect pearls and level up. I also learned to stop the ooze. The black gunk caused all kinds of problems in this fantasy world. Squids will appeal to a variety of people due to its cross-over nature.
