Spider-Man Edge of Time
SCORE: 69
In Spider-Man: Edge of Time, Activision was hoping to build on the success of last years Spider-Mad: Shattered Dimensions. While Spider-Man: Edge of Time is not a sequel to Shattered Dimension, it does follow two of the Spider-Man characters established by Shattered Dimensions - The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099. From the moment the game starts the presentation, graphics, and characters all feel familiar for those that played Shattered Dimensions. By focusing only on these two characters, the gameplay seems somewhat limited in Spider-Man: Edge of Time. Was Activision able to capitalize on the success of Shattered Dimensions and carry Spider-Man to a new level in Spider-Man: Edge of Time? Unfortunately, this answer is a simple “no”.
Spider-Man: Edge of Time follows the story of the two above mentioned Spider-Man characters as an evil mogul from the future goes back in time to change history so he will become the ruler of the world. He succeeds and and the world spirals downward. In additional, present day Amazing Spider-Man is killed and Spider-Man 2099 has to save him - and the world. The opening scenes and dialogue create an emotional setting for the plot and I was excited to move forward. However, the game turns into a simple and somewhat boring platforming game. The emotional connection that was made in the beginning of the game is quickly lost in the collection of items, tunnel crawling and lack of creativity.
Die-hard Spidey fans will want to pick up the game because the game does look good and it is fun to control both Spider-Man characters for a time - but it does get repetitive. Cut scenes are very well done and in game graphics are on par with current generation expectations. The controls are simple to learn, and new or experienced gamers will be able to pick up the game by jumping right into the action. I was excited to see Val Kilmer was cast as the lead Villain, but unfortunately the character does not get the development he deserves. Other characters are voiced well and serve their purpose. The sound track does help create the atmosphere for the game, while not distracting from the gameplay.
Spider-Man:
Edge of Time could have been the next step in taking Spider-Man to a new
level in video games, but was unable to live up to expectations. If
parents do pick up this title for their children, topics that can be
discussed include aggression, revenge and fighting. I hope Activision
will be able to improve on Spider-Man: Edge of Time in their next
Spider-Man title.
