Sonic CD
SCORE: 89
It has been many years since I last played
Sonic CD. I fondly remember this old Sega CD title. Sega has kindly
brought this title back. This time on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and
PC. There is also an iOS version but the controls will be slightly
different so they are not being attached to this review. Many Sonic fans
consider Sonic CD to be one of the best Sonic games of all time. I know
that thought crossed my mind a time or two.
Graphics are something that generally do not stand the test of time.
When Sonic CD was released they looked good. In 2011 they are not as
good. But I enjoy some retro gaming, and I enjoy noticing the little
things companies got right. The bonus levels are an interesting early
attempt in 3D by Sega. I enjoyed playing those.
Do you hate it when video games tell you how to do every little thing?
Well Sonic CD won't tell you what to do. Players figure it out for
themselves. I remember quickly how to change the time from past to
present, and the future. One of the innovative things I remember about
Sonic CD is doing this right inside the level. Sure it was mainly a
graphical over lay, but it is still a cool part of this home console
game.
Sonic CD has classic Sonic the Hedgehog sounds. I really enjoy the
musical track, as well as the special effect sounds. That ring
collecting sound sticks with us years later. Freeing flowers in some of
the stages is not as impactful as freeing little forest animals.
Although I always wondered how come Sonic was so much bigger than them.
The price of Sonic CD is extremely reasonable in my opinion. Five
dollars is really good for an older game like this one. I also suspect
many gamers missed the original version. Which in my opinion is a real
shame. The controls in Sonic CD are fantastic. I love the speed of these
older Sonic games. This is the pinnacle of Sonic the Hedgehog in my
opinion.
Sonic CD teaches us to combat the evils that enslave others. It also
shows that helping others is important. Sonic CD is a blast from the
past - literally. I am so thankful that Family Friendly Gaming was
provided a download code for this review. I would love to see more games
like this from Sega in the future. The violence is hitting robots that
contain enslaved animals. So hitting them frees them.
