Leave it to Her Interactive to raise the
bar in terms of books on the iPhone/iPod Touch. Shadow Ranch is a book.
You read it. I have to say that because some people will confuse this
app with a video game. They will be surprised when they are expected to
read. Which is a real shame because reading is such a joy. I am hoping
that someone gives the Holy Bible this kind of treatment. Okay maybe a
few books at a time.
Visually Shadow Ranch is a book. Yes I am repeating myself. The size of
the words can be increased in case the font is too small. There are
pictures throughout the book, and even some little mini games. They
generally look pretty good. There are a few with small graphics, but the
find the hidden item screens look fantastic. The items are hidden
intelligently.
Touching certain words and pictures will produce sounds. This is one of
the ways that Shadow Ranch is a real interactive book. I enjoyed them as
I read through Shadow Ranch. There are mysteries that need to be solved,
and some mild violent content in Shadow Ranch. I know Apple says four
years old and older but I would double that age personally. As an adult
I was fine with the content.
Anyone out there remember the choose your own adventure books? Well
there are parts of Shadow Ranch that remind me of that. This book lets
you make choices on what to do next. Some of these are dead ends, and
you have to go back and take the other path. There are hidden items that
are collectible items. Once you read through the book once there is some
different choices that can be made, but I am not interested in
re-reading the book again that quickly.
Shadow Ranch is completely touch screen based. Want to turn the page?
Well swipe the screen like turning the page. Mini games are also
completely touch based, and can be skipped if you want to get back to
reading. I enjoyed the story in Shadow Ranch, and appreciate the
presentation put into this book. The length of Shadow Ranch is
impressive, and I feel you will get your money's worth.
Family Friendly Gaming was provided a reviewable copy of Shadow Ranch. I
am very thankful that I am blessed to be able to experience this app. I
hope there are future apps done in a similar manner. Her Interactive has
opened a door that I expect a lot of products to walk through in the
coming years. Reading stimulates the brain, and ignites the imagination.
Shadow Ranch makes it easier by showing various characters and locales.
There is also an educational aspect to Shadow Ranch as definitions are
given for many words.
