Scotland Yard

Mentor Interactive has a creative thinking label by the name thinkSMART Games. Family Friendly Gaming was blessed with some games under this label, and I was selected to review Scotland Yard. This Nintendo DS video game is a lot like a hide and seek board game. The detectives go around the town trying to find the thief. If you play the thief then you are going around town trying to avoid capture. There are only so many turns for each side to complete their objective.

The artwork of the characters in Scotland Yard is impressive. I really enjoyed seeing the various characters and how the story unfolds. Then I got into the main core of the game play of Scotland Yard. This is like moving a piece around a board. Now the board is a city and there are various modes of transportation. There is a lot going on in the cities. I just came away underwhelmed for some reason.

The music in Scotland Yard perpetuates a mysterious aura. I enjoyed it, and enjoyed finding the thief. I found trying to hide as the thief was a little bit more difficult. It can be done, but I felt weird about playing a thief. It is like doing something wrong. I was relieved when I got caught because all was right in the world. Scotland Yard contains some language issues that families need to be aware of.

Up to six family members can enjoy Scotland Yard in either single card download play, or multi-card download play. Scotland Yard includes a few different cities to play in. The main replay value to Scotland Yard is catching friends and family members. Scotland Yard also includes some different modes but I will get to that in the next section. The game is selling new for around twenty dollars.

Various modes add some variety to Scotland Yard on the Nintendo DS. The core of the game play is a giant hide and go seek kind of game. Different ages had a different reaction to Scotland Yard. The younger set enjoyed playing it. Teenagers were not so impressed, and adults expected more. This leads my analysis to a determination that Scotland Yard is for children. That audience has the highest positive reaction to this hand held title.

I appreciate Mentor Interactive publishing this creative thinking game. Players can devise their own strategies in how to do a grid search. Arrogant people can get humbled by Scotland Yard because it is not as easy as they will think. I also like the concept of stopping the thief. The damage that theft causes is astounding. It has really hurt some wonderful people. Stealing is all about taking short cuts, and being selfish.
