Samurai Showdown
SCORE: 64
Samurai Showdown is a fighting game where
the characters have weapons. In essence Samurai Showdown is the
precursor to the weapon based fighting games of our era. Certain
characters also have pets which was novel for the time. Samurai Showdown
is another of the NEOGEO STATION games that Family Friendly Gaming has
been provided a download code for.
Fighting games by nature are violent. For some reason Samurai Showdown
seemed a little more violent than most I have had experiences with. The
slicing of the weapons may have something to do with that. Players can
be set on fire by special attacks by certain characters, and that was a
little uncomfortable as well. The animations felt a little slow to me,
and I am talking about the fighters. The background graphics looked a
little glitchy at times. Like they were on fast forward.
The slicing sounds in Samurai Showdown were sickening. At least to me.
Certain characters have things to say to one another after winning or
losing. These characters are not the most kind in the history of video
games. The music is pretty standard for this genre. Many of the special
effect sounds are also pretty standard. It can be draining to hear all
the punching and kicking.
Samurai Showdown includes an online mode where you can compete against
other players online. Two players can duke it out in Samurai Showdown
locally as well. In order to do that you have to enjoy the game play
style of Samurai Showdown. This game is not as smooth as the Street
Fighter games, but there are an okay amount of fighters to learn. I have
played Samurai Showdown games before, and to be honest I have not found
them to be as fun as other fighting games. This comes down to personal
preference. If you enjoy this franchise, then do not let my review deter
you from enjoying it.
The blood and violence in Samurai Showdown is what will turn off most
families. I have to admit the background graphics give me a headache,
and I am not fond of how this game plays. With that said there is a cult
following of Samurai Showdown, and they will take great interest of this
game on the Playstation 3. I know there are sequels to this game, and
maybe we will review them at some point.
