Picross 3D

Picross 3D is a thought provoking puzzle video game on the Nintendo DS that relies on luck more often than skill. If the number is two then you know there are two blocks in a row that need to stay. If there is a circle of square around the number then they are on the same row, but separated. Sounds pretty easy right? Well similar to Suduko, not everything is filled in. There are times when this hand held game makes you guess. Most of the time you get five misses before it is game over. The puzzle stays the same, so you can try different things in your next attempt.

The block shapes are gray until all of the extra blocks are removed. Then Picross 3D brings in the colors. The menu screens have some nice colors, and I enjoyed looking at my trophy screens. There are some cool little animations used in Picross 3D after an item has been identified. Watching an axe cut a tree is a good example, or seeing a fish swim around.

When you make mistakes or guess wrong, Picross 3D can be very frustrating. Thankfully Nintendo included soothing music that made me feel a little bit better about it. I did not hear any offensive sounds, or see any offensive words while playing Picross 3D on the Nintendo DS.

I really enjoy puzzle games because they almost always have a great amount of replay value to them. Picross 3D contains over 365 different puzzles. There are single card, and multi-card download play for up to five players. If all of that is not enough, then you can also create your own puzzles and share them with your friends. I spent my own money on Picross 3D, and feel like I got my moneys worth.

The touch screen controls in Picross 3D are generally good. I kept hitting something accidentally that would remove all but one side when I was trying to rotate. I would love to see that changed to a double tap in future releases of this franchise. I would also confuse the tagging control with the removal control. This was only a problem in shapes that are one mistake and you are out. I had fun playing Picross 3D, as did others here at Family Friendly Gaming.

I was guessing what the shape would be every single time I got near the bottom. Unfortunately for me I was rarely sure of what something was supposed to be. Nintendo continues to dominate in terms of the family friendly gaming market. Picross 3D is a fun puzzle game that made me think in different ways while I played it. I will be recommending Picross 3D to friends and family.
