NBA 2K12 NBA 2K12

The NBA 2K series has been the most critically acclaimed sports franchises of the past decade. Developer 2K Sports has made a visible effort each year to push the envelop in gameplay, presentation and graphics. NBA 2K12 continues that trend and takes gameplay to an entirely new level for sports games. Building upon the Jordan Moments in last years installment, 2K has something very special in store for fans this year.

Included in NBA 2K12 is a collection of the greatest players in NBA history. Each playable in a unique game scenario. From Michael Jordan to Jerry West, gamers can relive the glory days of the NBA. Win the specific game and you unlock some of the greatest teams of all time. This isn’t just playing as NBA greats, but 2K Sports really out did themselves in terms of presentation for the game mode. If you choose to play as Wilt Chamberlin, then be prepared to be awed by the fuzzy television coverage and true to date game commentary. Fast forward to the teams of the 80’s and the presentation is reflective of that time period. As a fan of the game of basketball, I felt that 2K paid great respect to the game itself and its players with the detail put forth in representing the NBA of yester-year.

Tweaks to My Player mode will make it more enjoyable to gamers, as they get right into the action much quicker. Speaking of getting right into the action, the new main menu interface is streamlined and more user friendly. Getting started in your favorite mode or exhibition is only a quick selection away. The presentation in NBA 2K12 is second to none. Period. From television style camera angles and a three man commentary team NBA 2K12 presents the game of basketball in the most realistic fashion to date.

The graphics and gameplay have been the strong points of the NBA 2K series for years, and that continues in NBA 2K12. When viewing from a distance, NBA 2K12 has the look of a real live television broadcast. The player movements and animations are breath taking at times. Gameplay continues to shine as players respond more accurately than in years past and the in game action is almost perfectly representative of the real NBA. I was taken back several times at the realism in the player specific moves and tendencies  seen in the top players.

My only real issue with NBA 2K12 is the lack of consistency in player models and faces. Most critics and fans will agree that NBA 2K12 is one of the best looking games to ever appear on a video game console. So that begs the question as to how can there be such hideous looking faces and player models in a game that gets so much right. Some of the players look like aliens and no where close to their human counterpart. And the coaches are some of the worst. And the reason they stick out so much is because the rest of the game is so impressive. It doesn’t take away from the overall graphical presentation or the gameplay, but it should be addressed in next years installment.

As a father, I appreciated the cheerleaders being appropriately and modestly dressed.  Parents can discuss healthy competition with their young gamers and I would recommend this game to video gamers of all ages. NBA 2K12 is simply the best basketball game to ever be played on a video game console. It is also possibly the greatest sports game ever developed.
