Metal Slug
SCORE: 59
Side scrolling shooter fans love the
Contra series. But hardcore side scrolling shooter fans always mention
Metal Slug. This franchise has been around for quite some time, and is
considered one of the greats by those who like to shoot thousands of
enemy soldiers, and save a few of their own along the way. I have known
about this series for some time now, but I do not recall ever reviewing
one of their games.
The opportunity came up when we were offered a download review code for
Metal Slug on the Playstation 3. For those wanting to know, yes I knew
exactly what I was getting myself into. I also know that Metal Slug on
the NEOGEO STATION is an older game. At one time this game was on the
most advanced video game machine that money could buy. But that was a
long time ago.
Visually Metal Slug holds up way better than I was expecting. There is a
lot of activity and motion on the screen. Many of the enemies look the
same, but after watching a few hundred die, I found they all began to
blur together. Metal Slug has an enormous amount of explosions. Blowing
up some of the bosses takes some time due to their massive size.
The music got me off my seat, and I was not expecting that. Metal Slug
has some real major rock sounds that energize the player. There
are also some sound bytes here and there that fit the theme of this
game. I enjoyed the concept of being able to save the lives of prisoners
of war. There are enough levels in Metal Slug to keep most gamers happy
for a few weeks. The price of Metal Slug is a little steep in my
opinion.
Metal Slug allows players to shoot in all directions. Shooting above is
very simple, but shooting below requires a jump. Vehicles are about in
specific locations that make the levels a lot easier. They take took
much damage and you have to bail though. Metal Slug is very kind in
terms of extra lives and continues. I appreciated being able to make it
so far. If you take this game slow and steady you should go a long ways.
The learning curve is done in a smooth manner that will encourage those
not used to the side scrolling shooting game style.
The core of Metal Slug is violence. Players shoot enemy soldiers with
various weapons. There are some sickening portions like setting the
enemy soldiers on fire. Major enemy vehicles will explode for an
extended period of time. The main lesson in Metal Slug is to get them
before they get you. There is a minor lesson in saving prisoners of war.
