Marvel Pinball Captain America Table

Just in time for the 4th of July, Captain America shows up to save the day in Marvel Pinball. ZEN Studios continues its parade of pinball heroes on the PS3 and XBOX 360 with an all new table featuring America’s favorite super-soldier. This table is an expansion to the Marvel Pinball game that we covered earlier this year. You can read the full review here: http://www.familyfriendlygaming.com/Reviews/2011/Marvel%20Pinball.html

The Captain America table features a World War II theme complete with bunkers and barbed wire. Cap and Bucky find themselves deep inside enemy territory and surrounded by danger. The colors are mostly muted save for the American flag prominently displayed in the background near the center of the table and Captain America in his classic red, white, and blue garb. This table features some mild war imagery including guns and some animated hand-to-hand combat, but manages to restrain itself from becoming too unfriendly for younger players.

The audio in the Captain America table is loud and powerful as with previous tables. The theme music is inspiring and patriotic which fits the mood of the table perfectly. The sound effects are potent and follow the theme of battle. The bumpers will produce the sound of gun fire when your pinball bounces off of them, but that was the extent of “violent” sound effects that I encountered during play. The voice acting is done well and the only mildly questionable dialog I detected was when Zemo said “Taste my death ray American!” He is the villain after all, so I suppose we shouldn’t expect that he would offer us cookies.

This table, as will the previous ones, provides players with plenty of reason to replay it over and over again. Pinball is one of those games that can draw you in and give you the desire to obtain the highest score humanly possible. And if you’re really competitive, your scores will also be posted to the on-line leaderboards where you can see where you rank with the rest of the world. I myself enjoyed a good stint in 6th place. Okay, truth be told, since this was a pre-release code I was reviewing there were only 29 of us on-line at the time. Once the drooling droves of pinball wizards get their hands on this game my score will quickly find its way into the murky depths of the leaderboard. The Captain America table is chock full of missions, modes of play, and trophies to earn. For $3 players can own this latest piece of pinball artistry from ZEN Studios that is sure to provide endless hours fun.

One distinction I noticed in the gameplay of this table in comparison to the others is that it seems to be more forgiving. Missions are easier to access and ball saves are more abundant. That is not to say that this table is less challenging, but it is easier to access more missions during each play and to play for longer periods due to extra balls. The Wolverine table has been my personal favorite thus far, but Captain America takes a close second.

The Captain America table is about as family friendly as the other tables in the game. While this table features some mild war imagery, it is certainly not an overwhelming factor of the game. Parents would likely be comfortable with pre-teens playing this game. If you’ve played the previous tables, you will find no greater cause for concern with this one. The Captain America expansion was a joy to play and review and I continue to look forward to the next Marvel hero to grace the virtual pinball table. This 4th of July, celebrate your national pride alongside Captain America.
