Mario Sports Mix
SCORE: 95
What is Nintendo thinking with Mario
Sports Mix? They have raised the bar yet again. We are used to playing
one sports game in the Mario Sports line up. Mario Sports Mix includes
four. In essence we get four games packages together into one.
Basketball has been done before on the Nintendo DS, but the Wii version
improves upon it in so many ways. The courts will challenge you, and
sometimes surprise you.
The Mario character graphics in Mario Sports Mix are fantastic. An
interesting side note is Princess Peach, and Princess Daisy put on
sports attire, whereas our plumbers stay the same. The Dragon Quest, and
Final Fantasy characters have an edgy look to them. There is some
cartoon violence in Mario Sports Mix. Things like hitting another
character with a turtle shell, bomb, or other Mario item. Certain courts
have hazards that can also harm or dizzy your character. In case you are
wondering the violence in Dodgeball is very tame. You can get into
scuffles in Hockey, but they are more comical than violent.
The music in Mario Sports Mix is exceptional. I enjoy the Mario sounds,
and I love the special effect sounds when I would score. I enjoyed the
voices when characters would score. I am not the only person on the
planet, and I did have someone playing with me complain that I was using
Mario too often, and they were tired of his celebration. I think that
may have been more of getting tired of having me win. I was nice and let
up on them later. If you want to you can also play with your Miis
characters in Mario Sports Mix, which is becoming a common theme in the
industry.
Mario Sports Mix includes four major sporting events. There is
Dodgeball, Volleyball, Basketball, and Hockey. Each of these has
multiple difficulties, and tournaments. Four family members can enjoy
Mario Sports Mix at the same time, and there are battle games for those
who want a change of pace. Family Friendly Gaming was provided a
reviewable copy of Mario Sports Mix. If they had not, I would have
purchased this game anyways because I feel it is worth the price.
The controls are very easy to learn, and similar between the four games.
There are some variances, but the game includes a quick tutorial for
each. There are certain aspects of certain courts/fields that irritated
me. The cool thing is they are a problem for both players. The
basketball court sliding away and revealing water in Donkey Kong's court
causes both players problems. The sprinklers in Princess Peach's
Dodgeball court are annoying, but again both sides have to deal with it.
These nuances kept me on my toes, and spiced up the action in Mario
Sports Mix.
Mario Sports Mix earns the Family Friendly Gaming seal of approval. Only
the top one to two percent of all games earn that honor. This Wii game
is fun for the whole family, and is generally very safe for all ages. We
let different ages try out Mario Sports Mix, and found it is very
approachable. The more you unlock the more difficult it becomes. So
anyone who complains that Mario Sports Mix is too easy, just needs to
keep playing. The game will challenge you later on, and will most likely
humble you. I hope that Nintendo continues this franchise, and continues
including multiple sports titles in one game.
