Magician Lord

I remember reading about Magician Lord a long, long time ago. I was curious at the time to play. I was not however wealthy enough to own a NEO GEO, nor were my parents. So all these years later I am an editor at a popular gaming e-zine, and website where I have been given the opportunity to play it. I am so very grateful that Family Friendly Gaming was provided a code to review Magician Lord. This game is part of the NEOGEO STATION on the Playstation 3, and it is also available on the Wii.

Magician Lord is an arcade game where the drop another coin in aspect was dropped. What do I mean by that? Well most arcade ports to consoles let you hit a button to simulate getting another life. As if you put another quarter in the machine. Magician Lord does not do there. You have so many lives, and so many continues. Pretty cool huh? Well the game play was not adjusted so expect a challenge.

The graphics are the first disappointment I had. The ESRB correctly found the blood and violence. To be honest I was expecting more blood, and the enemies vanish pretty quickly after the players magical attacks disperse them. The waves of enemies are very weak, but the end level bosses are insanely tough. There is a lot of talk in Magician Lord about magic, and demons, hell, etc. Keep that in mind if you consider letting your child play this game. The music is loud and proud. I found it got a little repetitive though.

There are enough levels to keep gamers busy for a few weeks. The difficulty of the levels is where the majority of the replay comes in. I found that everything happens the same in Magician Lord. Once you memorize where a problem is, then you move to avoid it, or destroy it. Magician Lord is one tough video game. With that said, it can be beaten. Some of that has to do with luck, and some of that has to do with skill. As far as the price goes, I would like to see it go down a few dollars personally.

There is a definite spiritual nature to Magician Lord. The player is playing a magician, who seeks eight magical books. These can remove an evil character from the world. The player transforms into various monstrous forms when certain gems are touched. The dragon looking form was the strangest looking in my opinion. Magician Lord is a game from the past that will probably only interest hardcore, and old school gamers. I have to admit I came away from this game more than a little disappointed.
