MASK The Complete Series
SCORE: 75
When I was younger I watched GI Joe,
Transformers, and other such cartoons from that era. I remember MASK
when it came out in the year of our Lord 1985. That makes me feel old. I
fondly remember the show, and a cool car that turned into a flying
machine. When we were contacted about Shout Factory releasing the entire
series on DVD, I was all over wanting to review it. Be careful what you
wish for my friends, because you just might get it.
MASK The Complete Series comes on twelve DVDs. There are sixty-five
episodes containing around twenty-five hours of action. When we review
things at Family Friendly Gaming we immerse ourselves in the product.
That theme song (while it is good) is going to be in my head for some
time. This is part of what we do, and part of the price we pay. No
complaints though because it has been a humorous experience to revisit
MASK.
Matt Trakker leads the Mobile Armored Strike Kommand (also known as
MASK). They fight against Miles Mayhem and his Vicious Evil Network of
Mayhem (also known as VENOM). Both sides have masks with special powers,
and their vehicles transform into other vehicles. A helicopter turns
into a jet, cars turn into flying machines, or submarines.
The first thing I noticed about the visuals in MASK The Complete Series
is how non-violent it is. A bad guy has a mask that shoots out darts.
These darts pin guards up against a wall by their coats. The good guys
will shoot a missile that attaches to the bad guys vehicle and then
turns on like a rocket engine. This sends the enemy away. There are
explosions, and there is laser fire. The creators of MASK The Complete
Series did a very good job of keeping the action as non-violent as
possible. That is one of the stand out aspects of this show.
The voices in MASK The Complete Series will bring a smile to your face.
You may even make certain comments about them. Various people at Family
Friendly Gaming had comments about things characters would say. Matt
Tracker constantly is losing track of his son, and his son's robot T-Bob
(who turns into a scooter). There is some minor name calling in certain
episodes. One of the bonus features also has some profanity in it.
I already mentioned how many episodes there are in MASK The Complete
Series. I also mentioned the length of time it can take to watch the
entire series. You will need breaks, and sleep - so you can't just sit
through this entire series. The price I see listed for MASK The Complete
Series is currently over sixty dollars on Amazon, and just under seventy
dollars on the Shout Factory website. I did some comparison and found
that other cartoon series with the same amount of episodes cost less. So
I believe the price is a little steep, but it should come down.
I really like the service messages at the end of each episode in MASK
The Complete Series. That is great to see, and something I miss in
modern day cartoons. The do a wonderful job of helping kids avoid
dangers. I noticed that in many episodes of MASK there are various
religions shown. They have characters worshiping statues, the wind,
trees, animals, and other odd things. Yet not once is the Christian
religion shown. This exclusion is rather odd. They included various
religious images and concepts, but ignored one of the most major that
has done good in the world.
There are certain episodes in MASK The Complete Series that include the
belief in evolution, and the belief in the earth being millions of years
old.
VENOM is always trying some scheme to make money in MASK The Complete
Series. The MASK agents stop them, and win the day. VENOM always
escapes. That is the major plot line in MASK The Complete Series. There
are various hidden cities, and treasures found in MASK The Complete
Series. In fact the MASK world is full of all kinds of treasures hidden
all over the place.
