Hoax for the Holidays
SCORE: 65
Hoax for the Holidays is one of the most
conflicted movie screeners I have ever seen. It starts out exploring a
girl whose life is pretty rough. She has a bad attitude which does not
help matters either. Her sister is in the hospital in what looks to be a
vegetative state. Her father obsesses over staying at the hospital. This
leaves poor Casey to pay all the bills. She used to be a Catholic but
fell away.
The interesting thing about Hoax for the Holidays is there are various
verses from the Holy Bible used. The priest in this film is the most off
the wall character you will ever meet. He references other religions in
a good light, makes deals for money, smokes, and seems very worldly.
Which to me is a shame because this movie could have accurately
portrayed a man of the cloth. But it chose not to.
Something else I found sad is how Hoax for the Holidays portrays most
Christians. Bear in mind I know many people from many different
denominations of the Christian faith. None of them act like this movie
portrayed them. From the greedy store owner to the people worshiping a
coffee stain on a wall.
What is fascinating about Hoax for the Holidays is how accurate it can
be on the state of affairs in terms of the commercialism of Christmas. I
can understand the frustration with those trying to cash in on tenants
of faith. It irritates me to hear people want to talk about what are you
getting for Christmas. I always turn it on them, and ask what are they
giving. What are they doing for others? It is disgusting that the season
of giving has been corrupted by merchants.
Hoax for the Holidays tries to deal with this in an interesting, and
different fashion. The main female character is into this one guy, but
he has a girlfriend and would feel guilty. She connives every way
possible to get his affection. She is profane on more than one
occurrence. Because of that I can not recommend this movie to children.
Hoax for the Holidays can spark a debate on the commercialism of
Christmas. What is ironic is this movie is going to be sold and bought
all the while it looks down upon the same idea.
I can see people of faith being offended by Hoax for the Holidays. The
beginning talks about how you have to reference all the different
religions. Casey gives her comments on disbelief over and over again.
There are concepts and characters in Hoax for the Holidays that are very
troubling to me. Sadly too many in this world are selfish.
Where I come from, people like Casey would receive help from the
Christian community. I have lost track of how many people I have
personally met who were helped by the church. There is a mild lesson in
Hoax for the Holidays about letting go of loved ones when they can no
longer care for themselves.
