Halo Legends

I have no idea why so many people have such an un-healthy obsession over Halo. I saw Halo Legends on sale, and decided to purchase it. Spending two hours with a franchise is so much easier than who knows how many hours in a war zone. By the way, who actually fantasizes about being in a war zone? Who wants to relax in that kind of an environment. Halo Legends is seven different anime style stories. They have tidbits of information that loosely tie together.

Halo Legends includes blood (in various colors), gore, some sexual content (in terms of the AI), and death. Halo Legends contains an insane amount of death in it. Some of the animation looks better than others. There is one done all about the Covenant that was horrible. I was very pleased to have finished watching that one. What will surprise a lot of viewers is many of these super powered soldiers are actually women.

Halo Legends is set in a science fiction fantasy universe spanning multiple worlds. There is talk of these other races, evolution, nasty creatures, destruction of all, and then reseeding the worlds. Fascinating bits of fantasy. Halo Legends includes bad language which does nothing to enhance the experience. In fact it distracts from the experience.

The bonus features on Halo Legends is lacking. There is a commentary by Directors Frank O’Connor and Joseph Chou. And that is it. I almost put crickets chirping because that is how felt when I realized that was all there was in Halo Legends. Oh I suppose you could say a few trailers are bonus features but to me that is pretty standard for any DVD. So to be complete there is a trailer for Halo Reach (a video game), and for Justice League Crisis on Two Earths. And so now that is all that is included.

The options on the menu screens have a different layout that can be utilized easily. I had some confusion about the order of the episodes on the main screen so I chose play all. The stories are so loosely connected that this is more like a collection than a single story that tells anything comprehensive. The stories did not seem to be told chronologically, so I came away wondering what the thought process was.

The main lesson I got from Halo Legends is war is inevitable. War is a part of life, and war will continue to happen. This does not inspire much hope. Various characters make sacrifices for others in Halo Legends, but it feels so hollow. What is the point when so many keep dying over and over again? Halo Legends depressed me, and I hope this franchise rests for an extended period. - Sam
