Guerrilla War
SCORE: 58
Family Friendly Gaming continues our
adventure through the recent SNK Playmore USA Corp releases. These games
are from before the NEO GEO. So they are on the older side. The good
news is they are arcade ports. Guerrilla War is similar to the well
known Ikari Warrior series. What will shock most of our readers is one
of the "heroes" in Guerrilla War is Fidel Castro. I suppose the
cruelty and mass murders fits him like a glove. But playing such an evil
person as one of the main characters is a little disturbing.
The graphics in Guerrilla War look better than Ikari Warriors. The
character models are larger, and are easier to see. The downside is
there is blood and the violence is more disturbing. I'm sorry I can't
get past an evil mass murdering dictator being a hero. Why didn't they
pick Hitler or something? It would have been just as offensive in most
circles. There are hostages in Guerrilla War that can be saved or
killed. Murdering a hostage is one of the more disturbing images in this
game.
Guerrilla War contains numerous sounds of war. Lots of shooting, and
explosions fill the television screen as the Playstation 3 or
Playstation Portable bring those to our ears. The "heroes" in Guerrilla
War are using violent means to overthrow an existing government. We all
know now that they were not any better as leaders, in fact they were
worse.
Hardcore gamers can enjoy a real challenge in Guerrilla War. The more
casual gamer can use continues so they can see this game. The price is
low for Guerrilla War. I see this home console downloadable game as a
piece of video game history. It shows that there really is nothing new
under the sun. The violent games have been around for a long time.
The controls in Guerrilla War work a little better than Ikari Warriors
in my opinion. There is more violence though so it all comes out in the
wash. I enjoyed turning my character to shoot in different directions.
The level of difficult of Guerrilla War is high. You have to be very
talented to avoid ever dying. I had to remind myself that this game was
a coin cruncher and the point was to take more of your money. Which is
why I enjoy ports of arcade games to home consoles.
Did I mention Fidel Castro in this review? Yeah that issue is still
stuck with me. I can not see oppressive communists pointing to this game
as propaganda, but I have been wrong before. Guerrilla War is about
killing various bad guys that look the same. If you kill a hostage then
you take a hit in your points, but I am not sure that is enough of a
deterrent.
