Gnomeo & Juliet is a retelling of the
Romeo and Juliet story but it is done with garden gnomes. You know the
little guys with hats. I hear they are all the rage over the pond. There
are some Americans who enjoy them as well. The reds and the blues hate
one another. As the movie progresses the level of violence increases. I
am sure you can guess that eventually it gets out of control. Do they
learn a lesson from their behavior? Will it take the death of Gnomeo &
Juliet to finally awaken their hearts?
The visuals in Gnomeo & Juliet are very inspired. Especially considering
we are talking about garden decor. It is humorous what comes in the way
of Gnomeo & Juliet kissing at various points in the movie. The flowers
look wonderful in Gnomeo & Juliet. I enjoyed the lawn mowers as well as
the various lawn ornaments. My oldest son thinks Gnomeo & Juliet is
stealing the Toy Story concept, but I like how this movie brings this
world to life.
Gnomeo & Juliet is oozing Elton John. If you enjoy his music then you
will be in gnome heaven. The voice acting is excellent in this movie.
Nanette (the frog) makes certain comments that could be construed as
sexual. Thankfully children will not comprehend the references. Gnomeo &
Juliet does a great job of avoiding the deception that Gnomeo & Juliet
have to enact.
Gnomeo & Juliet has some fun bonus features. I enjoyed seeing Ozzy
Osbourne doing the voice acting, as well as Elton builds a garden. There
is some bad language in some of the special features which is bleeped
out. Family Friendly Gaming was provided the Blu-ray + DVD pack of
Gnomeo & Juliet. This is nice because it can be used on the Blu-ray or
DVD players that many families own. The story is interesting enough that
you will be re-watching it. Well that depends on the age. I will be
writing about that shortly.
The discs functions without any issues. The layout is intelligent, and
easy to use. The story is where Gnomeo & Juliet shines. There are some
very humorous moments in this movie. There are some moments that can
scare children. In fact our six year old woke up with nightmares after
watching Gnomeo & Juliet. I honestly did not expect that. So families
need to be aware of that. He wound up being afraid of the lawn mower.
Hulk Hogan's voice may have had a part in that.
There is a gnome who wears a thong thing that is awkward. Gnomeo &
Juliet has a twist to the ending. I will not spoil it for you. Gnomeo &
Juliet teaches that revenge is an endless cycle. It is sad when people
hate one another and do not even know why. I also noticed a small
commentary in Gnomeo & Juliet about how bad it is when couples split up.
As an adult I found a lot of wonderful things in Gnomeo & Juliet. Just
watch your children if the lawn mowers scare them.
