Fossil Fighters Champions
SCORE: 72
My son had used his chore money to
purchase the first Fossil Fighters video game. He has enjoyed it, so I
was curious to see what Nintendo had done with the franchise. I should
preface my review with - I have very little personal experience with
this franchise. I have attempted to compare it to other franchises, but
am not sure any of those comparisons are accurate.
The first game franchise that comes to mind in terms of comparisons is
Pokemon. Fossil Fighters Champions is a role playing game. You have a
young character who likes to battle others. Battles are performed with
your team of creatures. In Fossil Fighters Champions they are vivosaurs
though. Might as well call them dinosaurs because that is what most of
them look like.
Players go into specific areas and dig up fossils. Those fossils are
taken to a center to be cleaned. The player must clean every new first
time find. This is done with a hammer and a drill. Destroy too much of
the fossil and you fail. Let the timer run down to zero with too much
still in rock, and you fail. Failure means the loss of your time and
that fossil.
When you have a vivosaurs head then you can revive it. The revival (and
not the church kind with a fire and brimstone preacher) brings the
creature back to life. They will then fight for you. There are cup
challenges as well as other fossil hunters to fight in. From time to
time certain bad guys will come across the player's path as well.
How many body parts you have will determine how powerful your vivosaurs
will be. The more you have, and better cleaning job you do the higher
their stats. They can level up through battles. Technically they rank
up. Expect fewer rank ups in Fossil Fighters Champions than in say a
Pokemon video game.
Fossil Fighters Champions includes some off color humor. As an adult I
shrugged this content off. Parents need to be aware of it if they let
their children play this Nintendo DS title. The music in Fossil Fighters
Champions is powerful at the right points in time. I enjoyed the sound
of Fossil Fighters Champions from start to finish.
The battle system in Fossil Fighters Champions is more complex than it
looks. Speed is important as well as certain elemental types. If your
creatures are faster than your opponent then you get the first attack.
Sometimes that first attack is the difference between success and
failure. Elemental types as well as leveling up your tools are very
important to success in Fossil Fighters Champions.
There are one hundred and forty vivosaurs in Fossil Fighters Champions.
Sort of brings new meaning to collect them all eh? Two to four family
members can enjoy Fossil Fighters Champions with wireless single-card
download play, or wireless multi-card download play. The challenge of
Fossil Fighters Champions will keep gamers engaged for a month or two.
