Fatal Fury

Fatal Fury in my opinion is the best of the SNK NEOGEO Station fighting games. This game has better balance, and is less of a quarter muncher than the others. I like the concept of only allowing so many continues, it adds replay value. I do understand that it means less of the family can be reached. Let us be serious though, Fatal Fury is only for hardcore gamers. Moms, and kids will not take an interest in this home console downloadable video game.

As I played Fatal Fury I noticed some interesting things. The muscle bound men are ripped to incredible proportions. There are female characters in the background who looked like ladies of the night to me. Although I am not sure lady would actually apply. There are various effects in Fatal Fury, and I liked how the level would change between matches. This helps keep a fighting game fresh and interesting.

Characters in Fatal Fury talk a little smack to one another. The music is energetic, and actually thematic at times. The intro cut scene is a great example of this. Unless you know how to play Fatal Fury, I would recommend reading the game manual (editor: which comes with the game). Not all of the moves are easily figured out. In fact Street Fighter puts Fatal Fury to shame in this regard. Special moves should not require ultra special skills to pull off.

There are a decent amount of players in Fatal Fury. Players have to go through a decent amount of opponents to beat the game. It takes skill, and a lot of replay to be able to defeat Fatal Fury. Online modes will interest competitive gamers, as well as fighting with a friend locally.

Spacing is the key I found in Fatal Fury. If I was spaced right, then my attacks would connect. If I was spaced wrong, then I could expect to take a healthy amount of damage. The computer can be cheap in Fatal Fury, and it is difficult to string together attacks. I also would go for throws and for some reason not connect. This led to frustration. Attacks do a large amount of damage which is good when you connect, but bad if you are on the receiving end.

Bashing people's faces in is not exactly fitting under the umbrella of family friendly. I believe that games like Fatal Fury do effect our frames of mind. I found myself getting angrier much quicker after playing this game, as opposed to playing something more relaxing. I also found out that my blood pressure went up after losing thanks to the computer being cheap. Oh its true, its true. The main lesson in Fatal Fury is to get them before they get you, and to do it again and again until they can't get back up.

I know that I am giving Fatal Fury a passing score. I do have my concerns about this game on moral, and ethical grounds. I normally do not play fighting games, and will most likely refrain from any in the near future. I am not a fan of seeing people's faces all messed up, and this game has that in spades.
