Exerbeat
SCORE: 89
I love exercise games. I enjoy sweating
while I am gaming. So I am always on the look out for something new,
fun, and worthwhile. We have been covering Exerbeat in the magazine for
many months now. I am happy to report a reviewable copy has made it into
our offices, and I have been playing it. This is not your standard
exercise game though. Rhythm has a lot to do with this game. There are
eight categories - Hip Hop, Latin Dance, Aerobics, Stretching,
Yoga/Pilates, Boxercising, Karate, and Karate Forms.
The animations of the trainers in Exerbeat is fantastic. They are very
encouraging, and exhibit the exercises. The level of detail of the
characters is lacking. The menu screens are great, and I love the around
the world images. After a few exercises I did not notice the lacking
details in the trainers as much. Exerbeat includes various movements
including things from Hip Hop and Latin dances. This could fit under
your definition of sexual. I was not bothered by it personally. My hips
don't move like that though.
Ya'll know me. I love it when a game is encouraging. Exerbeat is
extremely encouraging. It checks on you if you have problems doing
exercises as well. I loved doing a Karate work out perfectly and the
instructor mentioned it. The music fits the themes masterfully. Notice I
said themes? Each category has its own flavor. That is one of the things
that makes Exerbeat so unique. This is not just an exercise game, or a
dance game. It is both and so much more.
There are over one hundred and fifty exercises in Exerbeat. Let that
sink in for a minute. Families can easily play Exerbeat for a year or
more. There are enough different themes to keep various family members
content for months to come. Multiple exercises are unlocked, along with
challenges and walk around the world. I believe that Exerbeat is worth
the price of admission.
The core of Exerbeat is tempo. You have to get the rhythm down of what
you are doing. I found myself failing on some exercises because I was
off by a bit. Others I got right, and performed admirably. A few of the
exercises were harder to figure out than others. I had fun playing
Exerbeat, and I am sure I shed some pounds thanks to this game. I did
get frustrated when I could not get an exercise right, but moved on to
others.
Two family members can enjoy Exerbeat at the same time. This Wii game
uses the regular Wii Remote, Motion Plus, and the Wii Balance Board. I
love it when a game gets us off the couch. There have been many games on
the Wii that do that. Kinect games are also allowing families to get
exercise. Exerbeat differentiates itself by being a blended mix of
games, and styles. Yoga is drastically different than Karate, and this
game puts them both in there. It was a real pleasure for me to play and
review Exerbeat on the Wii. As long as you do not need the best graphics
on the planet you will enjoy this home console title.
