Cars 2

We will not deny that we are Cars fans at Family Friendly Gaming. So we feel very blessed to have received a copy of Cars 2 on Blu-ray + DVD. I hope to do this movie justice with my review. Doc is gone, and Lightning McQueen has won his fourth Piston Cup. Spies and intrigue enter the world of cars. As do many new car characters. Most of the old bunch are a part of Cars 2, but play much smaller roles. Cars 2 is ultimately about Tow Mater.

I don't mind the shift going to a different character. In fact exploring Tow Mater is a fun way to spend the film. We start out shaking our heads at the lack of tack Tow Mater has. He eventually does become the hero at the end of the day. He exposes the plot to discredit alternative fuels. And he gets to save Lightning McQueen's life.

Cars 2 is way more action packed than the original. There are explosions, crushed cars, and cars that are blown up. Thankfully much of the violence against cars is shown off camera. The cars and their paint jobs are spectacular. I love how Pixar did different things with many of the cars. This will of course sell more toys because it gives the toy makers a wider spectrum to choose from. How do I know this? Our youngest has already earned various new cars thanks to Cars 2.

The voice acting in Cars 2 is fantastic. It is just as good if not better than the original. There are some mild insults here and there. The lemons have risen up to take over the world. They are not happy with their station in life. Sally and Flo have an odd conversation about how hot they find another car. I find this odd because they are both in a committed relationship.

The Blu-ray + DVD combo is a nice package since it contains both. Both discs have the director's commentary, Air Mater (a new Mater's Tall Tales Toon), and Hawaiian Vacation (the Toy Story Toons). There are also sneak peaks. The Planes movie coming out in the spring of 2013 will generation the most buzz. And that is all there is in terms of extras. The movie will most likely get replayed. We have already watched it multiple times ourselves.

The storyline in Cars 2 is tightly woven together. I love some of the twists and turns it takes. I remember wondering in the theaters how come Lightning did not blow up when they used the death ray on him. Don't worry I will not spoil the surprise for you in case you have not seen it. The character development in Cars 2 is wonderful. It is great to go back to this franchise and see more of this world.

The majority of Cars 2 is very clean for families. There are some good songs that are played in the movie. The story is very entertaining. Cars 2 includes multiple instances of humor. I was not pleased with that conversation between Sally and Flo though - which is a minor part of the movie but still present. I am also surprised at how much violence was added. Bear in mind I am comparing Cars 2 to Cars. This movie is a worthy successor. I still like the first one better though.
