Bejeweled 3

The World's NUMBER ONE Puzzle Game has made it to the Nintendo DS. At least the case to the box claims Bejeweled 3 is the World's #1 Puzzle Game. I will take their word for it because the Bejeweled franchise has been huge in the puzzle genre. I have spent many hours playing these match three games. Although my latest kick has been another Popcap title (Bookworm on the iPad).

I played the Xbox 360 version, so I expected the DS version of Bejeweled 3 to be extremely scaled down. I mean this is a Nintendo DS game, not a 3DS game. The graphics in Bejeweled 3 shocked me. They look really good. I did not expect PopCap Games to be able to squeeze that much power out of this little hand held. The special effects look great, and the animations have the little wiggles to them.

Okay what is with that guys voice? I mean he is creepy. My hubby says he sounds like the guy from the Mortal Kombat games (editor: an anti-family franchise). He will grab your attention, and make you want to cower in the corner. The music is okay. I love the special effect sounds when I match three or more. Completing a quest has a great sound as well.

The hand held version of Bejeweled 3 can be taken wherever you go. My expectations for Bejeweled 3 on the DS are much lower. So I am happy to report there are a ton of modes, and ways to play Bejeweled 3. There are also achievements. Yes that concept has bled into the hand held version as well. I feel that Bejeweled 3 is worth the cost.

The touch screen works so much better than the controller on the Xbox 360. Sorry Microsoft, but it is a fact. I can make moves much quicker with a stylus than a controller. Some of the modes in Bejeweled 3 are difficult, and others are easy. The gems are randomly generated so starting over after coming up short makes sense. I struggled with certain quests, and then all of a sudden beat it. And beat it easily with a mountain of time left over.

The core of Bejeweled 3 is matching three of more of gems that are the same color and shape. This game does not stop there though. There are various other ways to play that will challenge the player. Keep butterflies away from a spider, get rid of the bombs before they blow up, match on every single tile, etc. Families can use Bejeweled 3 to help them focus on certain tasks. Bejeweled 3 is a wonderful mental exercise.
