Bastion
SCORE: 74
You have probably been following the
coverage of Bastion for months in Family Friendly Gaming. I know I have
been paying close attention to any piece of news that has come out on
this Xbox 360 (editor: and PC) game. The graphics in Bastion are one of
the portions of this downloadable game that stuck out to me. Once I
started to play it another aspect rang out.
Visually speaking Bastion is amazing. The ground comes flying up before
the player can walk over it. This little effect kept me on my toes. I
never knew what would appear next. This includes enemies. There is
violent content in Bastion. Player have a ranged and a close weapon.
Ranged weapons work great on some enemies, and the close weapon works
better on others. The violence can get repetitive.
The voice acting in Bastion is what rang out. The announcers voice is
awesome. He describes what you are doing while you are doing it. This is
one of the stand out aspects of Bastion. He does a great job of
explaining the complex story. The level of detail in the audio
department is astounding. I fell off a ledge by accident, and he said
something about me walking off the ledge. He also told me choices I
could make in certain key moments of the game.
There are enough levels, things to collect, things to purchase that
Bastion is worth the price of admission. Family Friendly Gaming was
provided a download code for this review. I feel that Bastion is worth
the price of admission for the older members of the family. Certain
aspects of this game put it in the teenage range for me. I will get to
one of those in just a few minutes. Well it depends on how fast you can
read.
Bastion mixes things up, and players can take a non violent approach in
some areas. I found that there are sections of Bastion that require the
player to kill all or most of the enemies. There are also other portions
where I could run and avoid violence altogether. I loved playing those
areas of Bastion. It takes more skill to make it through a level and
refrain from the violent path (aka the easier weaker path).
How quickly did you read that last paragraph? We are here now. Bastion
contains a spiritual system in it. There is talk of all these false gods
and how the people stopped worshiping them. There are various parallels
in it. People used to worship all kinds of false gods back in the day.
In fact some do to this day. When Jesus Christ came down to earth and
showed us how to have a relationship with God things changed. There is
still a danger of being arrogant and thinking you can do it by yourself.
Bastion's religious system can bring up questions and even impact the
attitudes of beliefs of players. This is another reason I feel this game
is for the less impressionable members of the family.
