Baseball Stars 2

You may remember SNK Playmore USA Corp released ten NEO GEO games on the Playstation 3. Well they are adding two more to that number. When we were offered codes, I was very interested in Baseball Stars 2. I was also excited to see that other reviewers were kind and left it for me. So I got my bat out (well technically controller), and was ready for some retro baseball action. I came away from Baseball Stars 2 impressed.

The graphics look way better than I was expecting. First off the details in the muscles are great. The diversity of players on the team is fantastic. All of the little visual effects going on  are more than I was expecting. Baseball Stars 2 is sort of a mixture of the arcade style with the simulation style. It is fun to play, but strategy is needed. Or maybe just luck. The jury is still out on that one.

The audio in Baseball Stars 2 is high energy. If you have a pulse this game will get you pumped up. I noticed I stayed pumped up for around an hour after playing Baseball Stars 2. I used this to get chores done and make things better in our area of the world. I hope that my fellow gamers will use this energy in the same fashion. The voices in Baseball Stars 2 are a little comical. They show their technological age.

There are enough teams and games in Baseball Stars 2 to make this worth the price of admission. Baseball Stars 2 includes an online mode so you can play other humans. That is the best aspect of this game in my opinion. Playing the computer is fine, but getting to go head to head with another thinking, and breathing human. I would like to sequels to this franchise in the future.

The game play in Baseball Stars 2 had its moments. There were times I could hit the ball right where I wanted to. Other times I swung right on through the ball. The collision detection routine had taken a nap or something. Pitching is pretty easy, and actually fun. Fielding was another off and on kind of thing. At times I was moving a infielder towards the ball, and he could get it, but the camera would swap over and then I was in control of the outfield. Who I was running away from the dribbling ball. Little things like that led to extra bases, runs scoring, etc. This gave me some frustration while playing.

All in all I found Baseball Stars 2 a fun experience. This game is not a walk in the park, nor will you immediately dominate. There is enough there though to have some fun. With that said there are a couple of moral and ethical issues with Baseball Stars 2. When a player strikes out they break their bat in a temper tantrum. Baseball Stars 2 includes bench clearing brawls as well. These examples of poor sportsmanship do not encourage the right behavior in my opinion.
