Apples to Apples
SCORE: 81
I have seen Apples to
Apples in terms of the board game at numerous stores. I have been
curious about it, but never acted upon my curiosity. When I heard THQ
was going to do a video game rendition of Apples to Apples, I knew we
had to cover it. I will be transparent, it was an opportunity for me to
learn about this franchise.
Apples to Apples is a game where there are tiles in the middle of the
screen with letters. There are hints to the left, and selections to the
right. The player must discern the correct answer, and then spell it in
the grid. Piece of cake right? Well the way we spell the words is where
Apples to Apples gets tricky. Start in one corner, go left, then up,
then right, and then up. That is a legitimate way of spelling in Apples
to Apples.
I am not sure of the font size in Apples to Apples. I am guessing a
four. This is my main complaint with Apples to Apples. The words are so
tiny it can be difficult to see them. So I found myself closer to the
television than I like to be just to be able to see the clues and choice
descriptions. The grid with the letters is the perfect size.
The music and special effect sounds in Apples to Apples is inspiring. I
enjoyed the sense of urgency this home console downloadable game gave me
when my timer was running out. I loved the excitement of finding the
right answer and gaining more time for my timer bar. I cringed when I
got too many wrong answers and lost all my time. Especially when I was a
question or two away from completing the set.
There are many questions in Apples to Apples. You probably noticed the
descriptors. There are words in our language that reference all kinds of
things. Apples to Apples includes many of them. This is the main reason
this home console game earned the Everyone 10+ rating. It would have
been more inclusive if some of that content had been left in the
dictionary.
There are various multiplayer modes in Apples to Apples. So families can
work together to solve the riddles in Apples to Apples. Once Apples to
Apples gets to the point where the answer words are no longer shown,
expect the challenge to increase geometrically. I have been supportive
of board games being translated into video games. Apples to Apples is
the latest example of this trend.
I really hope there are sequels to Apples to Apples. Especially if a
more family friendly version is created. This is still a fantastic first
foot forward for this franchise. I had fun playing Apples to Apples.
