ZhuZhu Pets

I was pretty excited when Zhu Zhu Pets arrived here at Family Friendly Gaming. Why? Well Zhu Zhu Pets was the Toy Fair's 2009 Toy of the Year. This Nintendo DS game is also based on hamsters. Long time readers will fondly remember our Hamsterz Life review, as well as our review score appearing on the cover art of said game. Hamsters have done well with Family Friendly Gaming, so I was instantly expecting great things from Zhu Zhu Pets.

There are a lot of wonderful colors used in Zhu Zhu Pets for the Nintendo DS. The six different worlds have some nice graphical diversity. The hamsters happily allow you to guide them through the thirty mazes to the goal. Some mazes require keys to be found. All of the items are detailed to easily differentiate what they are. My only issue with Zhu Zhu Pets is how small the hamsters are. Larger graphics in some of the areas would have been appreciated.

I have been getting into the music of Zhu Zhu Pets. It is light, upbeat, friendly, and fun. The theme of caring for your pets with food, water, and love carries a lot of weight here at Family Friendly Gaming. One of the funny things in Zhu Zhu Pets is how the hamsters get their privacy when taken to the bathroom. This brought a smile to my face, and works wonderfully. I did not hear, or read any offensive sounds or language while playing this Nintendo DS video game.

Zhu Zhu Pets contains thirty different levels. They are unlockable as you complete levels. The developer Black Lantern Studios kept this game fresh by letting players guide the hamsters on skateboards, a hamster ball, and a car. Sure it is not realistic, but it certain was fun. The more you play Zhu Zhu Pets, the more hamsters you unlock. This can make the game a little more hectic, but I did not mind.

The touch screen controls in Zhu Zhu Pets work amazingly well. It is easy to pick up a hamster, and put them on the food, water, or next room. Guiding them through the mazes is also very easy on the touch screen. I had no issues with that. Zhu Zhu Pets can get a little boring for adults, especially after playing all the mazes. Kids get into Zhu Zhu Pets, and are continuing to have fun.

Before we had children we had a hamster in our family. We will always have special memories of Peanut. Zhu Zhu Pets does a really good job of letting you care for animals. The basics of animal care is in this game. The mazes teach children how to find their way. Plenty of obstacles will face you in life, so Zhu Zhu Pets can be used to talk to children about that. Morally, and ethically speaking I can find nothing wrong with Zhu Zhu Pets on the Nintendo DS.
