World of Cars

We have been following the World of Cars on the Internet for quite some time now. In fact once we were able to register Cars toys we purchased we were on the site. My youngest son has been into Cars for a long time, and he loved getting to create his own little car online. We messed around with the Beta version of World of Cars, and have waited for it to get finished before messing around with it again. Well it has officially released, and I have been playing it. The THQ games may have spoiled me though.

The graphics are small, and it reminds me of games like Ultima Online. Before any of our readers start freaking out, I am talking about the viewpoint and size of the images. Don't get me wrong it is easy to tell who the different characters are. Lightning, Mater, DJ, Wingo, Doc, Sally, and more all look like their movie counterparts. Just a little smaller. The various areas look good, and have a lot of diversity to them. I did not find any offensive images while playing World of Cars.

Fans of the Disney Pixar Cars movie will recognize the sound bytes and music in World of Cars. Something about the phrases the characters say felt a little canned to me. There is a chat system in World of Cars. In order to turn on normal chat, an email is sent with instructions. So parents you can make sure your children are not chatting with people they do not know. I did not run into offensive language while playing World of Cars.

There are various areas to go to, along with various races in World of Cars. The free side of World of Cars can be beaten very quickly. If you want more then you have to pay $5.95 per month. After a few months this can get expensive. I expect that additional content will be added to World of Cars as time goes along. Spend a few hours doing the quests, and races to see if you want to continue playing it.

Players can use the mouse or the arrow keys to controls their vehicle in World of Cars. Take my advice and go with the mouse. If you played early Beta then you know the mouse was not the greatest controller. Disney Interactive Studios has improved that greatly. Races against the computer are very easy. I breezed through them. Racing other players is where it can get interesting. There is some mild strategy to the races in World of Cars, but not a whole lot.

World of Cars is a game that is generally safe for children. Be sure to have rules in your house about acquiring friends in an online game. Also decide what to do about the chatting. World of Cars does have a healthy list of phrases the player can pick from to say things. I personally preferred that. I like the idea of quests in World of Cars, and hope to see a 3D expansion in the future. Or the 3D games need to add quests.
