Wii Sports Resort

The WMG was very pumped up for Wii Sports Resort. That was until playing it, praying about it, and running the numbers. Wii Sports Resort is a sequel to Wii Sports (which came free with the Wii), and includes Wii MotionPlus. Wii MotionPlus is an improvement on the motion sensing controller. One of these Wii MotionPlus add ons come with the game. So if you want to have four players be able to play together then your family has to buy three more of them (editor: at twenty dollars a pop).

Wii Sports Resort has a lot of colors used on this tropical island. If you have played Wii Sports, and/or Wii Play, then you will recognize a lot of the areas. In fact there is a lot of visual recycling in Wii Sports Resort. There is generally a soft look, which has to do with the Miis being used throughout the game. Wii Sports Resort contains some violence as there is sword fighting, and knocking characters off the ledge. The player can also crash their plane in various locations (they parachute safely away).

The WMG is very familiar with most of the sounds in Wii Sports Resort. The dog barking is cool, even if it does not always find the frisbee. Nintendo does a masterful job of making sure every player knows how to play these games. The three minute intro video on how to connect the Wii MotionPlus was frustrating beyond belief. A few of us out here have enough brain cells, and life experiences that we know how to connect things without a three minute video putting us to sleep.

Nintendo included an okay amount of replay value to Wii Sports Resort. Some of these games have been played before (like Bowling), so starting all over was irritating. Having to purchase more Wii MotionPlus units to play with other family members irritates this reviewer to no end. Nintendo is out there bragging about how much money they are making, and this minor incremental improvement feels like a way to pad the books.

Wii Sports Resort has good controls. The WMG was just expecting something more. There is an improvement over the Wii Remote, but not enough to warrant the price in this reviewer’s opinion. The games are all simple, and can be mastered quickly. Most families will shelf this game in a few weeks.

Wii Sports Resort teaches hand eye coordination, and gets players up off the couch. Thing is, there are so many Nintendo products that do that now, that this game feels like only a little more. Too many of these games are turning into flashes in the pan, and collecting dust.
