What Am I Pets

I used to think anyone was crazy for letting a pre-schooler use their iPhone/iPod Touch. I have softened as my youngest has treated my iPod Touch with respect, and found numerous apps that he can play. So when Paul told me about What Am I Pets, I put my name down to review it when a download code came in. This app sounds like others we have seen with a few interesting twists. What Am I Pets lets children match animals, and put them together based on a clue.

The matching game is interesting because the child has one animal on the left and must drag it over to the right one on the right side. When that happens a child's voice tells us what the animal is. I listened to the turtle numerous times and could still not tell what was being said. The clues for the other game in What Am I Pets sounds really good.

The art looks good generally in What Am I Pets. The one complaint I have deals with a white dog, and white rabbit. This leads to confusion in the mix up portion of this app. The menu screens have a bubbly look to them. Again not really clear what some of the words were but trial and error allowed to figure things out. I did not find any offensive images while playing What Am I Pets.

I know of other animal matching, and zoo sounding apps that children play over and over again. For some reason they were not that interested in replaying What Am I Pets. I have my suspicions and that will be gone over in the next section. Two kinds of kids games in What Am I Pets is nice, although honestly one is way better than the other one.

Children who played What Am I Pets kept coming to me with problems in the mix up game. They knew what animal it was supposed to be, and they thought they had it right, yet the game told them they were wrong. This led to frustration. I played around with What Am I Pets to see if I could figure out the issues. The first one is the previously mentioned dog and rabbit being the same color. This led to problems with the legs mainly. The next problem is the three body pieces do not lock into place in the middle. I could get them off center just a bit and even though I had the right three parts (of say something green - the turtle), the game said I was wrong.

I like the idea of What Am I Pets, and the price point is really good. Teaching preschool children colors, animals, and sounds while they are having fun is a good idea. With a few things cleaned up this could become a great franchise in my opinion. I am a little disappointed with What Am I Pets, but I have been told I am pretty demanding.

{UPDATE 12/08/2010} The little man is saying tortoise in his scottish-liverpudlian accent.
