Trycube 2
SCORE: 77
Family Friendly Gaming was
given a reviewable copy of Trycube 2 on the iPhone/iPod Touch, and I was
lucky enough to be given the opportunity to review it. This game uses a
three by three by three cube. Player must rotate the cube (like a
Rubik's Cube) to get the pattern back to its original image. Thankfully
the images are pretty easy to duplicate in early levels. And of course
they get more difficult as the game progresses.
The visuals in Trycube 2 are pretty bland. This is needed when we look
through the cube to see where all the blue pieces are. Which side will
be rotated highlights, which enhances the game play. I still feel like
there much more that could have been done visually with this app. I
suppose for ninety-nine cents I can't complain, and this app is a
sequel.
The music in Trycube 2 is okay. I was not irritated or annoyed by it,
nor was it something that I was jamming to. The special effect sounds in
Trycube 2 are pretty cool, and brought me right back to my Rubik's Cube
impressions. I did not find any offensive sounds while playing Trycube 2
on the iPhone/iPod Touch. The sounds stay out of the way, and let the
player think which is nice. The downside is my thoughts can get pretty
loud, and a little distraction is welcome.
There are thirty-two levels in the three areas of Trycube 2. I am having
trouble weighing that versus the cost. Thirty-two levels is not a lot. I
know there are games/apps that have a lot more. Add in the price, and
its a toss up. Trycube 2 is a unique enough kind of puzzle game that it
will interest intelligent gamers. If you can get past the game play
issues this is a great buy.
There is one aspect of the controls in Trycube 2 that drove me crazy.
Rotating the cube around was fantastic, and very easy. Selecting what I
wanted to turn was very difficult. I am not sure why I had such problems
with this, but it took away from the game play experience for me. I had
to try multiple times, rotate it a little more, and whatnot just to
select the right part selected. Don't get me wrong, Trycube 2 is
playable.
I did not find a tutorial in Trycube 2, but it is pretty easy to figure
out how to play it. The concept of using a clear Rubik's Cube to create
certain patterns is very cerebral. I enjoy it when a game (or app in
this case) makes me think, and in a way I had not thought of before. I
would appreciate sequels to Trycube 2 in the near future, especially if
the select issue is improved.
