Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11

Each year EA Sports provides one of the best sporting experiences in videos games with their Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise for the Wii. Much like the game’s namesake, Tiger Woods, the team at EA Sports is never satisfied with the status quo – and the Wii gives team EA the opportunity to bring the best golf to video game fans with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11. Unlike the console versions, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 for the Wii is much more like being on the course. With the development of motion controllers for PS3 and Xbox 360 on the way, this will be the Wii’s last year of going solo with motion control. That being said, this is one of the most enjoyable and complete sports titles ever produced.

One feature of Tiger Woods PGA Tour that separates it from other sports titles is the use of the Wii MotionPlus technology. The swing mechanics are absolutely spot on. The implementation of the 1:1 motion control takes your golf swing to a whole new level. Wii MotionPlus is not required to play Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, but the gamer will not get the full advantage of the new swing mechanics without it. Two new swing options, Advanced Plus and Tour Pro, create a dynamic experience in swinging the Wii remote – these options do require the Wii MotionPlus accessory. This is no Wii Sports here. There is such detail in the swing mechanics that players can actually miss the ball entirely! Not that any of us have ever done that in real life.

My favorite addition to Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 is the Ryder Cup Tournament. For those non-golf fanatics, the Ryder Cup is a tournament between the United States and Europe. The Ryder Cup provides family and friends a chance to pair up and play in various co-op modes. This is a great addition to the franchise and is so easily to use. It will surely be a fan favorite. I loved the opportunity to set up the match-ups and make a run at winning this fantastic tournament. Nice job EA.

Also making its debut in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 is the new True View camera system. This is a whole new perspective in video game golfing. True View shows the ball on the screen, before and during your swing, from the perspective of the golfer – looking down at the ball. Once the ball is hit, you follow it in the air as if you were standing on the tee box or in the fairway. It is a true representation of golf. Not only are you looking down on the ball when swinging, but the camera also moves with the swing motion of the golfer so you can sense of the turning of the shoulders in the back swing. Not sure how many will buy into True View, but it is a great attempt from EA at making the golfing experience as real as possible.

Mini Golf is new as well. EA took the time to add four Mini Golf courses for those looking for a great mini game to spend some time with friends and family. Granted, this mode is a blast with one player, but who likes to play Mini Golf alone, right? This mode is for local play only this year. Hopefully, EA will make the adjustment to play Mini Golf online in the years to come.

Even with all of these new additions, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 brings back all of our favorite modes and features. Create-a-player is still so deep it is hard to stop making changes to my virtual self (what I think I should look like on the course). Another great mini game is disc golf and it is so much fun. Think of playing golf with frisbees. This mini game alone will keep you coming back for more.

The commentary is still provided by Kelly Tillman and Scott Van Pelt. The duo does a good job with the commentary of the golf rounds and making general observations as well, although it does get repetitive after a few rounds. Van Pelt is a seasoned sports anchor and radio host who has great knowledge of the sport and the game itself. Personally, I would like to see more of the enthusiasm that has made him so popular as a radio host and sports anchor. Perhaps EA will let him dial it up a notch next year.

The soundtrack in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 is pretty generic and does it’s job of providing background music. Nothing spectacular, but when has golf been about music? The in-game sounds of the golf tournaments are nice and provide authentic resemblance to their real life counter parts.

The graphics in the Wii version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 are obviously a step down from the HD versions on the PS3 and Xbox 360. But that is of no consequence, because this game is not about graphics, but rather gameplay and control. And the other console versions cannot make up for the lack of control with HD graphics. The player models are adequate and the courses look much the same as they did last year. It is not the best looking game on the Wii, but graphical presentation has not been and will not be the focus of EA for Tiger Woods on the Wii. They set out to create a great golf game with tons of features and replay value. They achieved their goal. This is simply the best golf game ever produced. Ever.

There are tons of mini games and unlockables. The depth of the game is second-to-none in the sports genre. From co-op Ryder Cup action to the online tournaments, gamers will find hours of entertainment and authentic golfing. The golfing pro and the video game junkie can each find plenty of options to enjoy Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11.

Parents can enjoy Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 with their entire family. Teamwork, sportsmanship, competition and much more can be discussed and taught when playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 from EA Sports. This is a must have for anyone that owns a Wii.
