The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom

It is a rare thing for me sit down, start a review and have nothing to say. I am almost always like the Matthew West Song: "Something to Say." Friends, family, and co-workers have known for years that I have something to say. Senators, Congressmen, and even the President know I have something to say. The reason I am working on compiling my thoughts is the creativity, and ingenuity behind The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. This downloadable Xbox 360 video game is one of the most unique video games I have played in my life. It is a puzzle game with quite a few fun little twists.

The only area that The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom can disappoint is the graphics. The old black and white is done for effect. Ya'll know Family Friendly Gaming though, we like color. We enjoy bright, and vibrant colors. So The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom can be a bit of a downer with the lack of color. This game is like watching an old silent movie, except its not silent. There is minor violence as the character can whack things out of the way. The most interesting thing - he will whack clones of himself. More on that coming in the game play paragraph.

The music fits the theme of this Xbox 360 game masterfully. I loved listening to the audio track quite a bit. The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom tells the story of a man obsessed with pies. He steals every single pie he can find. Once he gets the power of time travel, he decides to try and get all the pies he can. The special effect sounds also fit the theme, and added a cartoon element to The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. I did run into some minor language issues on rare occasions.

It is no big thing to make a mistake in The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. The player can immediately start to replay the level. The Odd Gentlemen included enough variation in how this game can be played that you will be spending weeks unlocking achievements. Since this is a downloadable game it costs a lot less. I feel The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom is worth the price of admission. Only one player can play at a time, however we found that ideas from others could solve certain levels.

The time mechanic is what makes The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom so special. There have been time bending video games before. The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom pulls it off really well.  You record actions of your character, and then let it play. Then you do something else. You might be wondering why this is needed. Lets say you can not jump high enough. So record yourself standing there. Jump on top of your clone and you can now get higher. Another example would be to have one of you jump on a see saw to launch another to a higher area. The gameplay in The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom is special, and what has me most in awe.

The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom got me thinking in new and interesting ways. The main character is obsessive compulsive about pies. That storyline is going on in between levels, and information at the bottom of the screen. The game does not condone his behavior, and in fact seems to be down on it in various areas. I can see The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom being used to talk about history in various families. It has my own children interested in silent movies now.
