The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda was a short lived cartoon that has been released on DVD. The three disc package has thirteen episodes of the animated television show, along with some special features. The television show has certain phrases that are repeated in every episode. The most well known is “excuse me princess.” Link is trying to get a kiss from princess Zelda, but something gets in the way. Gannon is after the triforce, and the duo of Link and Zelda defend it. Gannon is in the underworld, and sends troops up in various attempts to steal the tri-force. This show was a part of the Super Mario Bros Super Show, and has its entrance theme.

The visuals in The Legend of Zelda contain a lot of medieval style of fighting. Link shoots the bad guys with an energy beam to send them back to the underworld. So technically they never die. The attire of the characters is very respectable. Some of the same images are re-used, and honestly there is not a lot of variety in the graphics.

I got really tired of Link using that “excuse me princess” line in every single episode. Some episodes had this happen multiple times. The music is familiar to fans of the Legend of Zelda video games. These sounds have permeated millions of brains for many years now. Link is the well known hero who saves the princess and the day. There is one episode where Link’s spirit is separated from his body.

The Legend of Zelda has some live segments from the Super Mario Bros Super Show, trivia, sketch gallery, and a trivia quiz show. These are interesting to fans of the series, and fans of the show. I have watched the shows a few times, but they have not drawn me in like other animated series. The Legend of Zelda is a decent attempt at a television version of this franchise. There are two hundred and fifty minutes of animation on these three discs.

The menu screens are easy to move through on the discs of The Legend of Zelda. The stories were pretty predictable, and all them of are one shots. A continuation here or there would have been interesting. The length of the shows is what made all the one shot wonders a problem for me. The video games contained much longer storylines than all of these shows combined. I still got some enjoyment out of this franchise, and it makes me wonder when they will try a television show again.

There is an amazing sense of innocence in Link only wanting a kiss from the princess. The princess is a form of an action hero herself in The Legend of Zelda. This is interesting considering the era this cartoon was made. Stop evil, save the day, and use magical items to perform these tasks are the lessons I learned from The Legend of Zelda.
