The Last Airbender

I have been interested in the The Last Airbender since I first saw a preview for it. So it was my personal pleasure to receive a reviewable unit of this game on the Nintendo DS from our fabulous friends over at THQ. The Last Airbender follows the movie and has some nice little role playing game aspects to it. There are side quests the player can due for various characters as well as skills that can be upgraded from items collected during the action adventure sections of the game.

The Last Airbender looks better than I was expecting on the Nintendo DS. Close ups show the detail issues though. I also ran into a few graphical quirks in various areas of the game. The Last Airbender contains some cartoon violence as the player uses bending powers (special skills based on the elements), as well as martial arts to take out the enemies. Thankfully the violent content in The Last Airbender is broken up with a lot of puzzle elements. I really got into the puzzle elements in this game.

The music in The Last Airbender is exceptional. I really enjoyed listening to this Nintendo DS video game. The special effect sounds were great, and fit the theme of this game. I am glad that there is little voice acting, because it made more sense to read the storyline - at least to me. There are different characters in this hand held game with different motives. Getting to play both sides fleshed the characters out a lot more.

It will take gamers a few weeks to complete The Last Airbender on the Nintendo DS. Those of us with a Nintendo DSi were given a special bonus that was really nice to see. I like it when developers add a little content for upgraded systems like that. Various collectible and hidden items abound in The Last Airbender. I feel that The Last Airbender on the DS is worth the price of admission.

I am very skeptical of games that have touch only controls. The reason is I have been burned time and time again with control issues in such games. I immediately thought the worst when I realized The Last Airbender had touch only screen controls. As I played through this DS game I kept looking for some control issue. I never found it. Whatever THQ did to make The Last Airbender control so well is something they need to sell to other companies. I had a lot of fun playing The Last Airbender, especially the areas that required thought. Getting to do chores for others was also an enjoyable part of The Last Airbender.

The Last Airbender has various lessons. One of the biggest ones I gleaned was to not run from responsibility. Another big lesson in The Last Airbender is balance. There are some light eastern philosophies in The Last Airbender. The characters have a lot of development in this game, and there are some humorous moments. I would like to see a sequel to this style of game, especially the controls.
