The Impossible Test

The Impossible Test is basically a collection of clever brain teasers from PixelCUBE Studios. Available on the iPhone and iPod Touch, The Impossible Test employs well thought out puzzles. These puzzles, at times, will cause you to wonder if indeed this test is impossible. Your objective is to complete all of the questions without using up all of your lives while also trying to achieve the best time against your friends, family, and on-line users.

The images used in The Impossible Test are pretty basic, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact it works quite well in this game. Each question features a simple graphical image that poses some type of mental challenge. Most are cleverly designed to cause you to react with your instincts rather than taking the time to focus on what is being presented. For example, you may be tempted by a bright green button labeled “GO”. Since this is a game of speed after all, you will almost certainly react by pushing the button as it beckons you to do so. Unfortunately if you had simply read the directions at the top of the screen you would see that is quite unclear states “Press the button to not-advance”. The game will commonly use this combination of simple, seemingly intuitive images and tricky phrases to trip you up.

While audio is not really essential in this game, improvements in this area would certainly make the game more enjoyable. The Impossible Test features a single background song throughout the entire game which becomes a tad irritating as you play. In addition to the lackluster background music, there are only a handful of sound effects used. The vast majority of sound effects are simple “clicks” that occur when you press something on the screen. A little variety here would have made the game more fun to play.

The Impossible Test will likely take you a decent amount of time to play through to completion. This isn’t because the game is extremely long, but that you will be forced to start over when you fail. This can be frustrating but on the up side it will help you improve your time on each question. The latest update from PixelCUBE Studios added a checkpoint from which you can start if you fail. The checkpoint is reached quite early on, so you will still find yourself replaying many of the same puzzles but it’s better than nothing. Once you finish the game, there aren’t too many worthwhile incentives to replay it. The game has 3 hidden “secrets” to discover and an Easter egg to unlock. Additionally the creators promise to add more questions in future updates. Other than that, the amusement is pretty much over after you’ve solved all the questions. Currently The Impossible Test is a free download, so you’re not out anything if you give it a try.

The controls for The Impossible Test utilize just about every aspect of the iPhone/iPod Touch you can think of. You’ll be tapping, shaking, tilting and looking like a crazy person all the way to the end. Second only to the brilliant usage of trick questions, this is the most imaginative feature of the game. During the course of play I did things with my iPod I had never before thought possible. I do recommend that you play this in a non-public area as your contortions may alarm unsuspecting bystanders.

The Impossible Test is a game that’s safe for the whole family and it could make for some fun competition. The only negative items I found in the game were a word or two that may be offensive to some and the comments made by the game regarding your score can be insulting. Though they are meant to be amusing, they are not uplifting or encouraging. If you’re looking for a little freebie to challenge your mind, give The Impossible Test a chance.
